hi all, well i've been wanting to upgrade my hard drives for a while as i had hitachi deskstars.hd tune put them at an average transfer of 44.4mb/s.so i started reading up about ssd's.i really wanted one but they are too expensive for the sizes.so in the end i decided to get 2 640gb 64mb sata 6gb/s caviar blacks and raid0 them.i'll take the plunge on the ssd's when they come out in bigger capacities.i'm well pleased with the blacks speed though.hd tune rates them at an average of 180mb/s so i'm seeing a big increase in performance

Thing to remember is the random access times, and no mechanical HD can touch SSD's on this and 4k read/write. For this reason, go for an SSD for OS and key programs, and large mech HD for storage.

yes.i very nearly went for the ssd,but it would only have been 64 gig which is too small for me.the blacks were only 54 quid each which i thought was cheap.going from 44mb/s to 180mb/s is very noticable so i'm happy for now.and i got the bonus of another wow factor when i do eventually go for ssd

Average of 180MB/sec seems a bit low. I used to get 210MB/sec average with 2x 640GB in RAID-0

I would have gone for the Samsung F3 500GB / 1TB drives as well, blacks are good but the Samsumg F3's are about the quickest 7200RPM SATA drives around currently.

My single 1TB F3 does 121MB/sec avg read
