Hi,

One thing that has always puzzled me with HDD pricing - why is it that often buying an external drive is cheaper that buying an internal drive, even though the external model uses same drive and has the extra expense of the case etc?

For instance :-

This is the same drive as used by this :-

I've bought the external one before, and on dismantling it has the same drive. I appreciate that taking the external unit apart invalidates warranty, but just discussing price difference here.

On a side note, using the drive from the external unit internally and it shows in an odd 2 to 3 partition setup and data in unreadable. Similarly, moving a formatted drive into the external box and it requires reinitialising/reformatting to work. Seems the controller board is doing some odd things...

Asked many time but not sure why they take hit on Ext enclosures, they run hot I have had 2 WD My Books die due to heat, the 1st was a Caviar Black 7.2K RPM but later model was Greens so 6K.RPM.

The Element would no doubt work outside its enclosure but AFAIK the My Books back then (not sure now) did not as they were encrypted so outside the chip inside the inside the enclosure it would be unusable.
