I recently bought one of these and connected it up today. First time I've ever had any storage connected to my router.

I've gone through the setup process which all went fine but now I have not got a clue how to transfer files into it. I mainly want to use it for backups from my PC and storing pics/videos.

I thought I could just select a file and send it to it. There is no option for the my cloud device in the "send to" option of the files!

Is there any settings I need to change?

OS win 7

just open it up in file explorer and drag n drop the files to it.

For setting your backups, start the WD Smartware up, you can set your backup etc there

Hi there, sprite1275.

So from what I understand you've already setup everything from the dashboard and you want to start backing up your files?
If this is the case, all you need to do now is to download the Desktop App and use the credentials for your account to log in. There, you'll find all of the available folders (shares) for this user and you can copy data to your cloud by simply dragging and dropping folders or files in the share you want to save them to (e.g. "pictures").
Here's a pretty useful page, which might help: My Cloud Mirror Learning Center.
You can find a lot of helpful topics along with links for downloading the App and the software available for the device.
@ShakenNstirred has suggested using the WD SmartWare for backups, which is a pretty good advice. You should be able to find it in the same link.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the advice. I managed to download the app and i can now drag/drop files. As for PC Back Up i created a file under my username and im currently backing up to that.

Sorry as these might be stupid questions but i know nothing about this cloud stuff.

1, How secure is the data i put on it? is it only me that can access it? im not sure what the public folder means or the (shares) you mention, is it open to anyone?

2, Is there a way of automatically backing up my photos from my smartphone?

3, ive seen the unit on when im not connected to it with anything (solid blue light rather than slowly flashing blue light) why is this?

No worries, those are not stupid questions at all.

1. Basically only devices connected to the same network, which is the cloud connected to, can access its dashboard. And even then you'd need your username and password in order to log in and manage everything regarding the cloud. As you might have already noticed, you can add users and manage all the shares they have access to, including the read/write privileges. You decide and set it from the dashboard, so basically no one can access any of your information without a user name and a password. As for the public folder - this is a folder which is accessible to all users with both read and write privileges. So basically everyone who has access to your cloud can store files there and modify existing ones. This is convenient if a bunch of your family members or friends have users for your cloud, but you've set personal shares for everybody and let's say if someone is away from home and wants to share a file with everyone e.g. a video - s/he can upload it in the public share where all the users can see it.

2. As @ShakenNstirred has mentioned, just install the My Cloud app. Once you enter your credentials and connect, click on to top left corner and scroll down to select "settings". From there you can set Auto Sync to "Wi-Fi only", "Always on", or "Always off". Scroll down a bit and you should see "Back up options", select it and mark Camera back up. If you'd like for the app to backup your videos and photos by using your cellular data plan as well, you can select it, but note that this might be a bit costly depending on your plan. Other than that, you can set the destination path and folder of the cloud as well.

3. This is nothing to worry about. Basically this happens if you have some backups scheduled or it might have something to do with your network. It always happens when I turn on my computer although I haven't accessed it. It just goes for a few minutes out of sleep mode and then goes back to slowly fading in and out. If the leds bothers you, there's an option in the dashboard's menu, which can turn them all off.

Cheers!
