Just ordered a Western Digital 250gb Raid Edition (WD2500YS), and just read that WD does not recommend these for non-raid setups !

I am not planning to raid this drive, indeed it will be the only drive !

Can anyone reassure that I have done the right thing - I want reliability and the five year warranty looks impressive, just a bit concerned that it is not going to perform well in a non-raid setup

Thanks :)

I can't see anything on the WD site to suggest that the RAID edition drives aren't suitable for single drive operation. The only thing which possibly points that way is that the RAID edition drives may not attempt error recovery for as long as the desktop ones to prevent them being flagged as offline by a RAID controller. This should not affect day to day performance.

The Western Digital RE2 drives come with Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) enabled. You can use the WDTLER utility to disable TLER if you are using the drive in a non-RAID environment. Search for wdtler.zip
