Hey,

Dunno if it's been like this for a while, but I've just recently noticed that one or both of my Raptors are making a sort of grinding noise when they are reading/writing data... is this a sign of trouble? Will this sort of fault be picked up be drive scanning tools?

Cheers,

Suman

Try case open and see its its more like a rattling noise, that would be the arms seeking esp as you say reading/wrting data, if not in raid try 1 at a time cause I doubt both would go wrong at same time, unless too hot and still to go at same time would be bad luck, it should have a Dynamic Fluid bearing anyhow

I expect this is normal, they do have a quite grinding seek noise.
Try taking one out of the case and it will probably get much quieter.

You can use defrag or something to see if its seek noise.
If they are 'grinding' when idle then there may be a problem.

Have you moved anything around recently?
Moving the case or drives can change the noise level dramatically.

I've only ever noticed any noise from mine when I'm writing to them. Other wise they are very quiet.

True they are now sat outside my case to keep the pc cool, dropped about 2 degrees inside the case once I took them out.
