Hello

Managed to get two of these drives for my new NAS for a great price of just about £39 each so seemed worth a punt.

Model number WD Red WD30EFRX 3TB (CMR)

What are the best tools to check the health and to see if any will be impending doom :p. I know they are both around 2.8 years old so will be out of warranty soon.

They will be used for the usual nas stuff but I'm also going to have it save critical files to Cloud storage and a duplicate external HDD so redundancy should not be an issue. Or should I bite the bullet and buy new ironwolfs instead for about 3 times the cost.

I like those drives! They are nice and quiet and never had any issues with them. The Ironwolf and the latest Red Plus' are noisier. I would be tempted to keep them unless you have a specific reason to ditch them.

I managed to find some proper software and checked the power on hours etc. So even though they are just over 3 years old I think I got lucky and they have only been on around 2900 hours each or 120 days and testing for errors showed nothing really. Think I will keep them as looks like I got a good deal. Was looking at the ironwolfs so that's great to know they are noisier as this nas sits within ear shot.

The Ironwolf* cycle from active to idle_a is extremely quiet. It's all the cycles between idle_a, idle_b, idle_c and idle_d that make the churning sounds apart from complicated reads and writes (which aren't part of my usage - only heard it on an intensive benchmark). Can use SeaChest to disable some idle modes if you don't mind a bit more power being used, and you won't hear them. After a few years without a mech drive in my PC I'm back to having two of them and happy with more storage and no noise. That said, great bargain on those two older Reds.
