I'm looking at expanding my NAS again and recently bought some WD 6TB Red Pro drives to replace the 3TB Seagate ones that failed. I was hoping to expand the array with additional disks but noticed over the past week that everywhere has either got no stock or removed them from their listings.

Anyone know what is going on?

Hi,

Bad news on the WD RED 6tb PRO drives as we have a shortage of them in the UK with no date of when stock will be available again. Some people estimate May but hopefully not. Anyone who has stock at the moment you will be paying a lot for.

I have been trying to get stock for sometime and it is not looking good according to WD.

Sorry to give the bad news.

Just so you know, the Pro are the 7200 RPM model.

Only really need them if you have many users accessing it at the same time

I've got 10 red standards in a housing going 24/7 (Don't tell boogieman :D) and have been running fine for about a year now.

I have a pair of these, they are beautiful drives, and are faster than the 4TB WD Blacks in my main PC.

I mean, that doesn't help you find any for sale, but still.

I'm actually looking at swapping over to 1TB 2.5" drives in RAID 6 as I don't need the RAID 10 performance and the power costs are a bit high. Purely used for overnight backups.

Hi Homer.

Unfortunately I can't really be of much help regarding the stock and the upcoming products. I don't have the liberty to discuss any devices, which have not been publicly released yet (or if they'll ever be). However if you wish, I may ask for additional info regarding the WD RED 6TB PRO drives' stock situation.
As for the number of drives in an enclosure - those are really just recommendations. It should not affect the warranty. If a drive fails and this happens withing its warranty period, you should be able to RMA it, regardless of how many other drive you have in that enclosure or computer case, etc.

Cheers!

Thanks, hoping the "PRO" drives come back in stock as the extra 2 years warranty is a nice thing to have.
