The mxq boxes are good, firetv, firestick it go through dlna if you have a smart tv.
I replaced my WDTV live with a Raspberry Pi3 running RasPlex. You'll need a Plex Server though.
Well, if you're playing from your hard drive I assume your PC is left on? You could install Plex Server on your PC, it's a free download.
Ah, I'm assuming you can't just plug the HDD into the TV in that case?
why not just get another wdtv?
Personally I would get a Roku unit, gives you the USB functionality as well as the on demand channels. Then also gives you an output for plex in the future if you decide to go that way.

Have you thought of about the Raspberry Pi? couple it with an external HD or USB stick for storage, install Plex/ Kodi /openELEC for playback.
I would just get that Android box does everything under one roof.
That's the one decent spec too.You can either use Kodi,Plex for playback or download an app.
Raspberry Pi 3 with openELEC, I use it to play content off my NAS
The op just wants something he can plug and play. A pi would be good but certainly isn't plug and play![]()
Ok, it's not exactly 'out of the box' but you only need to do a tiny bit of work yourself to achieve what you need.
1. Purchase a Pi: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raspberry-pi-2-model-b-soc-mini-mainboard-1-gb-ram-4x-usb-2.0-mb-014-ok.html (kit with a case/power supply and v3 would be better found on...another website)
2. Purchase SD card pre-loaded with NOOBS: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/8gb-...oobs-official-card-and-adapter-fl-016-ok.html (first boot select openELEC and wait 5mins)
3. Plug external hard drive or USB for playback.
Done.
