Bought a Western Digital (not from OcUK), and it turned out to be a WD3200AAKS-00YGA0 from Jan 2008.

I know the single platter version is meant to perform better, but how does the two platter version compare for noise and heat? If anyone has tried both.

i havent tried both but I have the single platter...

dnload HDTune and benchmark it...

I get..:
TRANSFER RATE:
MIN.: 51.3 MB.sec
MAX.:107.8 MB.sec
AVR.:83.8 MB.sec

Access TIme: 16.3ms

they are known for their poor access time

How do you know if it's dual or single platter? I just bought a wd3200aaks for 33 shipped...hopefully it's single

Going by the second part of the serial number after the hyphen. Single platter have WD3200AAKS-00B3A0 or similar.

And Manufacturer date probably a good indicator too.
