Hi,

Got the wd hard disk and vista at the same time.Vista will not detect the hard drive at all.Not sure why but if anyone could help I would be grateful.
My memory is 2x512 the motherboard is msi 865pe neo 2 and an old p4 cpu.
I will post this in both the os and the hard drives forums if that is ok.Thanks for any help.

Kind regards,

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.Sorry for the delay. The drive is connected to port 1 and I think it is intel controller.I did not notice anything in bios will shut down and check now.
The full part number of the mainboard is msi 865pe neo2-ls(601-6728-020)
Sorry for being slow with this.

Kind regards.

No need to apologise, 30mins is pretty quick for this forum.

The LS one only has the Intel SATA controller so that's one less thing to worry about. I'm now however wondering if I've gone and missed something blindingly obvious...

Is the WD drive the only one in the PC or is Vista already installed on another disk?

Hi,

I should have said that I have a 80gb maxtor hd and a smaller quantum 15gb and a cdrw plus a dvd drive.Vista installed on the maxtor which is not a sata drive.I got the wd for the install but vista can not see it.I saw nothing about sata in the bios which is amibios 3.31a.

Kind regards,
mconnaola

Can you take a look on the Standard CMOS Features page of the BIOS for me. There should be 8 entries for Primary IDE Master through to Fourth IDE Slave, your Maxtor & Quantum HDDs plus the optical drives should appear on the primary and secondary channels and I'm hoping that the WD drive appears on one of the Third/Fourth lines.

Check in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Disk Managment. Sometimes you can't see it in Windows Explorer, but DM needs to activitate the drive befor you can partition and format it.

Hi,

Checked the standard cmos it showed the maxtor and the quantum but nothing on third master/slave or fourth master/slave and the same in disk managment. Thanks for the help guys but I am going to call it a night.

OK, we need to get it showing in that section of the BIOS before the drive is going to be available to Windows. There are a couple of main possibilities at this point
  • The SATA controller is disabled in the BIOS
  • The controller isn't doing the speed negotiation with the drive properly and it needs to be set manually

The first one is the easiest to check. On the Integrated Peripherals BIOS screen there should be an On-Chip IDE Configuration sub menu. On that menu the ATA Configuration option should be set to P-ATA+S-ATA, the S-ATA Keep Enabled should be Yes and Configure S-ATA as RAID should be No.

If those are all set correctly and the drive still doesn't show on the main page then you'll need to check the disk itself. There should be a small 8 pin jumper block to the right of the SATA data port on the back edge of the drive, are there any jumper caps across any of the pins?

Hi,

Thank for the advice you were right.S-ata was disabled. My on-chip ide configuration screen look like this.
on-chip ata(s) operate mode legacy mode
ata configuration p-ata + s-ata
s-ata keep enabled yes
p-ata keep enabled no
p-ata channel selection both
combined mode option p-ata 1st channel
s-ata ports defination p0-master/p1-slave

I have now installed vista on the wd s-ata drive. The pc can see all 3 hard drives but not the 2 dvd/cd drives and the load time for vista is minutes, is that normal.

Kind regards,

I'd need to wait till I got home to check the MSI manual but I think you might need to set p-ata keep enabled to yes to get the opticals recognised.

I can't comment on the load time though, I'm sticking with XP till you guys find all the bugs ;)

Hi,

I can only change ata configuration, combined mode option and s-ata ports defination.
If i change the combined mode option to s-ata 1st channel I can see the s-ata wd hd and the dvd/cd drives but not the other 2 hd's.

Kind regards,
mconnaola
