Just brought a new WD5000AAKS and it's stupidly loud! Basically the vibration is crazy and is resonating inside my case like mad. Is this normal!? I've got two other maxtor drives that hardly seems to vibrate at all. Is it best to ask for a refund or swap cause i've had it for less then a week!

Thanks all

If the case is resonating then the drive is attached to tightly to it. Try decoupling the drive either with rubber grommets on the screws or by mounting it in a bungee cord sling.

It's a good way to quieten down hard drives, but is resonating this badly normal behaviour for this drive, all the reviews said it was dead quiet.

Well, i've taken it out and put it on a foam matt at the bottom of my case now, and the vibrations are still audiable. Just by simply touching the drive I can tell it's vibrating a heck of a lot more then my maxtor drives, still convinced this isn't normail. Should I return the drive?

Mine vibrates a fair bit more than my old drive did (seagate I think). It became very irritating after a while - not hugely audible but the sort of sound that resonates through your brain. Tied it into one of the bigger drive bays with some elastic and it's pretty much silent now.

Mine is dead quiet and doesn't vibrate. Sounds like a physically buckled/unbalanced disk.

I dropped a HDD once and it went like this.

RMA'ing is a bad idea. If it's found to be working (and you state here it does) then it's pretty unlikely you'll get anything different back. You may also end up with a nominal charge for P&P/Testing as it's not faulty.

Well it got picked up today. I explained the problem and asked for a refund, lets see what happens. Mean while theres a samsung drive on it's way to me!
