So last night me and a mate are sat watchign tv and a few other housemates are upstairs in their rooms. I heard to front door open so I'm thinking who this is must be a mate or something.

So as I'm sat in my chair I look accross the room to the living room door and I see a 6ft tall bloke with a baseball cap walk past rather gingerly! I almost **** myself!

Anyway I shout hello through to him so he knows I'm there and he just ignores me and carrys on through into the kitchen, at which point my mate goes through and asks him what hes doing. He pretty much ignored him and started heading towards the door saying "ah Im looking for Stewart hes having a party"

We told him there was no party and he went out the door and stood at the hedge.

Now at first we though we had disturbed him and he didnt take anything but we later realised he had taken my mates mp3 player that was on the kitchen table. We presume he had looked through the kitchen window and seen it then gone round the front and tried the door and gone straight for it hence he knew where he was going.

Absolutely fuming at the cheek and disrespect of the ****. We called the police and they came round so we gave them a description but it doesnt sound like they will be able to do anything as he kept his face hidden.

By the way the door should have been locked although for some reason the yale latch didnt engage fully so he was able to just open it, we shall have to make sure we fully slam it shut in the future.

Thats what I thought, there was two if us downstairs and 4 more upstairs I was quite suprised.

You hear so many stories of them carrying knives and things though so I didnt want to get aggressive with him or anything. He had balls to do that though, especially since he kept going in the kitchen after I shouted through to him!

Wow quite shocking, did he seem high/drunk? How old did he look, if he was pretty young maybe it was a cheap dare. Is there a Stuart in your house

How come you leave your front door unlocked?

I would have grabbed him by the scruff of the neck, dragged him outside and gave him a beating.

Here's a lesson for anybody sharing a student house (or similar). It's well known that thieves will just walk into a house of 4 or more students because they know they can just pretend to be someone's acquaintance if found in the house. It happened to my friends house but they twigged and locked the guy in someone's room -- until he started smashing the place up.

Unbelieavable, and you just let him walk out even though you had no idea who he was? I would have tackled him to the ground and stomped on his face a few times for good measure, then call the police.

Before or after you **** yourself ?

My mate was sitting a football match about ten years back when a burglar just walked straight into his living room. Cue a rather amusing Benny Hill moment as the burglar realised there was nearly a dozen blokes sitting around the room, half cut. I have no idea how he got away.......actually, it was probably the fact that all the drunkards had to stop for breath just past the front door.

of course you would, you would go and assault someone for no reason other than being in the house which you couldnt quickly confirm wether he was with someone else or not....

go back to your risky wheelspins.

Cheeky git! At least it was just the MP3 player they took. And at least now you'll all check the doors locked when you go in/out.

I got a leaflet from Endsleigh the other day in a uni leaflet pack. I wasn't going to bother with contents insurance this year (was covered in halls last year) but having read your post I think I'll take it out now! (I at uni in Leeds, living in Headingley).

When my partner lived in a shared student house they were burgled while we were all in the house.
Two blokes came in at 6:30am took books, dvds etc from downstairs then brazen as anything walked into one of the lads room looked at him and said i'm just borrowing these and took his wallet and car keys
Before the lad could get out of bed the bloke was off down the stairs.
Steve said he thought it was one of the other flatmates friends so at first it didn't click what he was saying.
It makes you so made that this happens and in such a cocky manner.

You did the right thing, like others have said he could have been carrying a knife you just don't know anymore. An mp3 player isn't worth getting hurt or worse.

How much was the MP3 player £200 max?

Not worth it if the cheeky sod pulled out a knife and seriously hurt you or one of your housemates.
