We just got a bird table with a bird box built in...next steps?

Ok so we got a very nice hand build bird table with a bird box built into the roof.

Is there anything we need to do in order to get the birds to nest in it, or is it a matter of just waiting for the birds to realise it is there?

Is there a prime location that we can place it in the garden? Options we have:

  • Middle of the garden
  • In one corner of the garden that has a row of conifers
  • In another corner that has a line of bushes, which behind is a beck/stream & open fields (thinking about the wild life/food??)

We have a load of bird feeders in an apple tree already, we do get a few birds, but a problem is we have a few cats that stroll in which I think doesn't help, and if this wasnt the case we would get loads more.

Any tips on how to keep the cats away? I have tried soaking them with buckets of water but they still seem to come back after they have dried off!!

Any other tips will be great :)

With ours we put a little food ( fat sacks ) just nailed on the wall near it and eventually they found their way in.

As for the cats i would say shoot them but that would be unfair haha. You can get these things you plug into the wall in an outside socket and it will emmit a high pitch noise which will keep them away.
 
Somewhere where cats,mice,rats etc can't jump onto it,- or climb into it.

Also - The bird box will only be home to one bird / family of birds & other birds will try to take it. Actually having a feeding table and bird home in one is a very bad idea & will most likely not have any birds living in it - but it's just one of those things the manufacturers don't think about. As they are very terratorial the birds will not like other birds landing on their doorstep.

Check what hole/entrance size it has - this will determine what species of bird it can accomodate - then position it either N,S,E or W depending on what that bird prefers (and whether it should be shaded etc)
