"We no longer insure in that area"

Now I am without a bike for a month due to not expecting to pay several hundred quid for insurance this month!

Should I go back to them and argue it?

Don't forget to cancel the tax so you don't get fined for no insurance under our awesome new law >.>

In regards to the new law... Wut? lol

I am just going to lay the bike up over the winter now and reinsure next year when spring crops up in June! haha.

In all seriousness though, I did go looking for other insurers, found one even cheaper! But yea, realistically, I will only ride it when weather is like it is currently, which is only for a few more days...

Will declare SORN on Monday :(

The new vehicle insurance law means that the registered keeper of a vehicle must keep it insured unless they've made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). If you're not insured and haven't made a SORN, you could face a penalty. Find out what the change in the law means for you.

Oh, that's not new? But aye, thanks for the link :)

Like I said, will declare SORN on Monday, just incase I impulse insure on Sunday due to weather.

At the worst two(I think) grades of postcodes for insurance there is usually a heightened requirement for motorcycles, be that secure storage or securing to anchoring on the ground. I'd imagine the postcode has been regraded to one of these levels and maybe they just won't take the risk full stop, or had you already told them it would be kept on the street or similar? In which case it would be the lack of storage preventing them insuring you rather than the area in itself.

Locked garage, full alarm and immoby, including a data tag and tracker! Bike has the whole 9 yards in terms of security! And it's shocking that I can now get insured by many other companies, for around the same price, and even a couple cheaper? With no questions regarding my location.

When I changed the policies address from Reading to Twyford, it went down like £40 for the year... Not a lot, but a difference. Same situation regarding security as well.

So I honestly think something is fishy going on.

I have a friend who used to live in Whitley, he decided to get his escort GTi debadged to stop it the local scrotes trying to nick it. They failed a few times due to imobiliser and other security measures.

Its got some of the worst car crime figures in Berkshire iirc?

Crikey! where do you live, a Brazilian Favela?

I have never heard of an insurance company not insuring because of the area you live either.

Many Insurance companies refuse to insure anyone in Northern Ireland. There are also many that refuse to Insure specific parts of Northern Ireland... In fact in a few cities / towns here - there will be a difference of over £1000 pounds if you live in a specific postcode and have exactly the same car / credentials - but live 100m away from someone else.

Haven't you got to insure it regardless of SORN, what if it is nicked whilst parked up for the winter?

I thought it was optional whilst on SORN. SORN means you cannot, under any circumstance, insured or not, have the vehicle on the road. Private land you can do what ever, but the moment you touch the road... You break the law.

As for insurance, I had my bike on SORN over last winter and was still insured, asked at the time and the reply was pretty much... "Up to you, you will be covered if it's stolen at least, but not on the roads".

I won't be covering as it will be in bits this winter :)

Hopefully coming out of the garage with a tasty 1098 engine instead of the 748 lump :D

Of course you haven't

SORN means it will never be on road or in any public area, so its not covered by the RTA

As soon as you touch a public highway / public area you need insurance.

A motor vehicle thats not used under above conditions is just the same as any other asset, you don't insure at your own risk
