Strictly speaking, it would be quite easy to get away with bringing in swords as "Works of Art" (that's not actually the definition of the cpc) as you can also use the same thing for collectors items which you can quite easily argue swords fall into.

I love customs sometimes, at the end of the day as long as your interpretation of the rules is technically correct you can get a lot of leeway with these things.

Your right, a lot of the trade do bend these rules to fit but it does work both ways on the larger scale, ie the Large Business Groups not one off imports. It also depends on how much the EPU gives a toss about what your doing, or if you have a high risk assesment and your being watched by your Local Office(r) etc. However if the Officer's interpretation of those laws differs it will be disputed, if checked upon in the first place.. involving visits/confiscation yada yada

On an off note, you confuse me, CPC stands for Customs Procedure Code. Ie what is happening with that document for movement/removal/import, 407100 being home use with VAT for a removal say... do you mean the Commodity Code? Ie the code for that classification of goods?

eg:

9701100000 is the heading for Artwork iirc

+What should i be looking for in a sword?

Im thinking of buying within the next few days, and then just getting it shipped across to the UK (I'll enquire at the post office or something).

Something that isn't stainless steel. You want a "live" type, these start at £100. What type, European or Asian? This forum is pretty good..

Am i missing something about that website? Theres a forum login thing on the left, but no link to the actual forum anywhere on the page!?

& Why not stainless steel? And what about the one i pointed out previously, any good?

Ive asked in a shop over here that sells them duty free, and what they do is give me a 'note' saying that the swords are purely for ornamental value and arnt actual weapons. Although they said that traveling into the UK, that its likely that that wont be enough. :(

Stainless steel is brittle, it's not used for functional swords. Of course it doesn't rust but it's a wall-hanger only. Download the QVC movie with the blade tapping it onto the wooden counter, that was a stainless steel blade (one of those cheap "ninja" straight swords)

Forged steel will rust so needs frequent oiling, but is a "real blade"
That Hiragana is a proper sword.

That site I gave does have a forum. That's why it's called sword forum :D

Im not looking for one to use. Prehaps i wasnt clear in this thread.
Its purely for display purposes only. And prehaps the occasional me playing around acting like Tom Cruise...:p

So if that sword ive pointed out is one thats gonna require maintenance, do you know of a similar one that wont require maintenence?
Thanks bty.

##EDIT##
Looking around, basically the ones that cost over £100 are generally the 'forged' ones that require maintenence. And the sub £100 ones are the decorative ones that dont require maintenence. True?
So going off that, hows this one:

If the 'decorative' ones are that much cheaper, i might get two different ones and a wall mount. :p

Most of the stainless steel swords just look nasty, they come with low quality fittings. I wouldn't recommend any £30 stainless steel wallhanger, they're not something to "be proud you own" sitting on the mantle piece. They just look cheap. Only wallhangers that are associated with movie look half decent (LOTR) but they're expensive because you're paying for the name.

Maintanence of a real blade isn't that hard, once a month just wipe it with a lightly oiled chomais leather cloth. A mate has a Paul Chen Pratical Plus, I'll be buying a Paul Chen Orchid.

Im likely to forget to maintain one though. :p

Is there such thing as a 'half way', that requires no maintenence, but looks good?
Or is it one or the other?

Get a Kendo stick/sword, they're functional and require no maintence. And at least it's a real weapon, not a kiddie toy (by that I mean only kids buy stainless steel swords, because they're cheap and then use them because they're stupid)

Bokken

Again, i dont intend to use the sword at all. Its purely gonna be something that'll sit on my wall and look nice.

##EDIT##
This one looks good, but its stainless steel, but you lot say that that looks bad? But this one doesnt?
http://www.blades-uk.com/large_pic.php?product_id=2138

Im pretty sure the ones ive seen in LAoX & Yodibashi are steel as well, and they look pretty impressive as well.

What exactely do you mean when you say that 'Stainless Steel looks bad'?

A bokken in a single stand would look nice, simple elegant. It's still functional too, it's just a bit of wood.

The LOTR replicas look nice

So basically, im gonna have to spend my money on a 'forged' one for it to look good. But that'll require monthly maintenence?
So going off that, how was the first one i suggested way back?

If you mean the "Hiragana Katana" it much nicer sword, but the stamped dragon emblem ruins it. Japanese have no association with dragons, that's the Chinese. It's like putting a Honda badge onto a Ferrari. :)

Yes that one will require maintence.

if you don't use it for goring people, it won't require as regular oiling as one which is used for such.

I dont plan on using it for anything.
Its just gonna sit there on the wall, and v.v.v.v.occasionally it'll be taken down to be looked at.
Will it need maintenence in that scenario?

Yes, it is untreated steel. I would wipe it once a month with a lint-free cloth. Use choji or a very light mineral oil. Not difficult really. I don't think mate has cleaned his and that looks fine, although they do apply a bit too much (sticky/tacky globs along the blade)

checkout www.j-armory.com for lots of HQ pictures.

You can use sword cleaning kits, however the cheaper ones have an abrasive powder which does more harm than good (will scratch the steel)
