Wearing a bow tie to an interview.

I've not read through the thread so I don't know the general trend of the replies but I can guess that most of them say "don't do it".

Many years ago, when I was based out on the road, doing hardware support when we did real and proper repairs on computers (think resoldering dry joints, swapping actual memory chips, stripping down laser printers to almost component level, aligning heads on hard drives, etc), I used to wear a suit and a bow tie. We were expected to wear suits then and not just jeans/cargo trousers and polo shirts that Dell/HP 'technicians' tend to turn up in these days.

I went for an interview once in my suit and bow tie and was asked if that was what I'd normally wear to work. I explained that it was and that I wore a bow tie because it gave a smart appearance and it was better suited to the role, as it was impossible to get a bow tie caught in a printer, or drag inside a computer, snagging, picking up dust etc.

I got the job. It was appropriate. It may not be appropriate in every case.
