Wearing a cravat instead of a tie?

Just wondering under what circumstances can a man wear a cravat?

I like the look of them, would look good under a waist coat as well :)

Does it have to be his own wedding? Is it okay to have a normal shirt? :)
 
I think a cravat should be worn under the same circumstances as a bowtie.

I think only hugh hefner can get away with it because hes so rich nobody bothers questioning it.
 
They generally look terrible when a 'silk' scarf is work as a tie, along with an ill-fitting rented suit. However, a nice cravat under an open necked shirt can be an exceptionally dapper look for a gent.
