Web hosting and domain name advice

Just have a look at my sig. That trade mark sig of Mr Marley enjoying his joint was replaced by a single line of text, no doubt by a Don! ;)

So, instead of paying Photobucket for hosting my images with more bandwidth allowance would it be feasible to just buy a web hosting service and go through that route? I've also found a few domain names which I wouldn't mind buying for 2 years.

The advantages I can see are:
- More flexibility as I can do as I please with my space as I'm not restricted to images
- I can have my own personal e-mail address
- I wouldn't have a don replacing my sig with text again ;)

The disadvantages are:
- I don't know the first thing about web hosting or domain name buying

Any advice is welcome! :)

www.vidahost.com

Can't recommend them enough, they make things easy and they're really helpful on the phone too, have converted a few people to them. £35 a year for an amazing hosting package (5+ domains on one accounts, loads of mysql databases, tonnes of bandwidth & space)

Even though I have my own hosting, I use SkyDrive or http://sigrotor.com to host my sig. I fear the uncontrollable F5-ing of you excited OcUKers will drain my bandwidth to hell.

I use TSOhost though. Never had a problem and it works perfectly with Google Apps for customised email.

With web hosting do I need to take into consideration security or anything else for that matter? How do I assign a domain name to a web hosting IP address. Would that involve a DNS?

If you're just hosting images or a simple web page, then you don't have to worry about security. The server side security at the data centre will take care of it. Just make sure your cpanel and ftp passwords are safe.

If you're running advanced scripts or a forum or something, then yes, you may need to implement/code some your own extra security/patches.

To assign a domain name to a hosting provider, just login to the domain name registrar's website and change the nameserver addresses to the ones provided by your hosting company.

Setting up a domain name is pretty easy. If you register a domain through a host like Vidahost and buy a hosting package from them, they will link it to the correct IP for you - you barely have to do anything apart from sign up.

Vidahost's basic package for £17 a year looks pretty good if you're just hosting a few images.

I got my domain from reg-123 and space from godady. people warned me over their service but meh, how often is there a problem nowadays.

saying that I'm only using flash, html and jpg's so I need a high space and bandwidth service

You can't stop that. If you break sig rules you will have it replaced by a nice don. If you break sig rules too much Zefan kills your pets*.

I host mine and Kreeee's sigs.. thats quite enough bandwidth.. who isnt caching images dammit!!!

*maybe not

I'd just get a domain from 123-Reg (.uk) or namecheap (others - check for coupons) and then use Google Apps so you can get Gmail for your domain and there's also Google Sites for hosting bits and pieces.
No need for webhosting if you're hardly going to use it.
