I've had webhosting since Jan 05 with a webhost called shyper, i signed up to them at the time as i previously had free webspace with them and they did a half decent job, and they also gave a good price(£40 a year for 1.5gb, php, mysql, domain etc)

A f͘ew months back they got bought over, and the new owners closed everyone's webhosting. They sent a email to all the customers at the time but they must have had my old email so i didn't receive it, so i ended up having to email them myself asking what was happening and i received this generic email back(shortened version shown below).

Shyper discontinued hosting services effective July 2008. Email notifications were sent to inform you of these changes.

Unfortunately support is no longer available. The majority of shyper clients have moved on to new hosting and website files on Shyper services are no longer accessible. If you are a customer who did not have current or correct email contact information then we apologize for any inconvenience and you will need to secure new web hosting at this time.

If you purchased a domain through Shyper's Enom reseller account we can push your domain to another Enom accredited registrar when requested to do so. Domains are unlocked at this time so you can also request a transfer from the domain registrar of your choice.

So basically I need a new web host for around the same price or less, I've stopped using my web space around last year however i still use it for the odd file or two i need to share with others, but the main reason i keep it is to preserve my domain and stop someone else from stealing it.

What webhost would suit my needs best? and is it easy to transfer domains as i've never done it before(my domain expires Jan 09)

Firstly I'd transfer your name to a registrar independent of the host you're going to (bit of redundancy).

What are your websites used for? I find dreamhost to be a good allrounder, with high amounts of bandwidth and space for cheap, speed and response is not the best, but I find it fine for hosting media and person sites, recently got a package with them for unlimited space and bandwidth for £5 a month.

Its for a basic website for my dads company-although its nothing too important, just html really and it only gets a few hits per week, doubt it does him much business, just there to keep him happy.
I used to have my own website, but i discontinued that so it'll just be used for my personal use e.g. sharing big files with people i know.

If i register my domain with an independent host, would i then need a unique ip for my webspace for the domain to point to? and any recommendations for registrars?
