Hey,

I recently signed up for a free .co.uk domain name, now I'm basically looking to teach myself how to design a professional looking website although I've never done anything like it before. Does anyone have any tips on what tools and resources I should start off with?

how did you get a free .co.uk?

tbh if it's free then you're probably not technically the owner.

If I cancel my Microsoft Office Live subscription, can I keep my domain name?

Your domain name will be registered with Melbourne IT, our domain name registrar, with you as the registrant (owner). If you cancel the Office Live service, you maintain full control of your domain name through the Web site of Melbourne IT (www.melbourneit.com.au/). However, you cannot transfer your domain name to another registrar for 60 days after signing up with Office Live. Note that once you cancel your Office Live subscription, you are responsible for paying the annual registration fee for the domain name.

Seems I do..? I suggest you all sign up too, you need a credit card for ID verification purposes though :)

No worries! :)

I'm basically looking to set up a price comparison website with a twist, although TBH I've no idea where to start even with the plethora of tutorials on those sites...

Best plan of action? Get stuck into the HTML & PHP tutorials? Or try out some macromedia/adobe website making tools? whadyareckon? If you signed up for a free domain you guys owe me some advice! :p :)

I think I'd rather spend £3/year on a .co.uk or £4/year on a .com address and have full control over it... ;)
yeah, same for hosting. i often wonder why people go with all these crap free services for the sake of a couple of quid a month.

Yep.

I'd start off with (X)HTML and CSS first and then move onto PHP, but I don't see the harm in doing it the other way around. Good places for learning the ropes with (X)HTML and CSS include:

It would also be useful to read up about Semantics and Structure of (X)HTML as well as Web Standards. As for development software Notepad++ is good, but if you search for HTML and/or PHP text editors you'll find various other free options.

And if you don't know anything about PHP at all, Tizag's PHP tutorials are a decent place to learn the basics.

Thanks for the advice, I'd best get started! :)
Learning (X)HTML and CSS is definitely the best way to get started with web design.

However, it should be noted that you cannot write your own HTML (much less PHP) or use third party applications on the Microsoft Office Live Basic package; you're locked into using their horrible online website editor.

You can use your own Web design software to create your Web site and quickly upload it to your Office Live public site.

Important There are several very important things you need to know about using your own design software.

Only Office Live subscription owners and administrators can activate the third-party design software option.
Editors have permission to edit the Web site but cannot activate or deactivate the software.
After you have activated the option to use your own design software, any pages you have created using the Office Live Web Designer are permanently deleted, and a new directory for your Web pages is created.
You will not be able to use or edit your site using the Office Live Web Designer.
You will not have access to the Image Gallery or the Document Gallery.
You will not be able to restore your site to the pages that were created before the time of activation.
If you choose to return to using the Office Live Web Designer, all of the Web pages you have created using third-party software will be deleted from your Web site and you will need to recreate them using the Office Live Web Designer. Four basic page templates will be available to you in Page Manager.

Believe this is from the FAQ, though I just copied it from the forum I found this on. Unfortunately I cant mention it here.

PM me and I can sort you out with some sort of hosting, free of course.

I can also help you with the basics of HTML/CSS if you like.

P.S. My msn is in my profile.
