Website feedback

The gradient of the header jars a bit with the gradient of the background, and the image in the header seems a bit... random...

I'd make the nav stand out a bit more as well as the contrast's pretty low, which doesn't help to make it stand out when people are looking for the nav.

Up the text size of the content as well, make it a bit easier to read

and the point of that would be wot ?

I have the psd been and have been working on it all day it was like this when i first started it

the text i copied coz i couldnt be arsed to type anything :D

Well if you're into graphic design/print I'd expect to see a ace layout with a lot of flare, not something you've followed from a tutorial, as It'll alwasy look like a template unfortunately.

I also don't think showing sig you created for forum members from ages ago looks too professional :) E.g. I even see one I requested on this very forum years ago :)

Also, if you're looking for any type of web job, you should at the very least make sure you markeup validates. E.g. currently the site isn't HTML 4 valid, eek! See http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...(detect+automatically)&doctype=Inline&group=0

Sorry slightly off topic, I used to develop quite a lot a few years ago, my how things change fast. Looking at the code of Chris' site along with the heavy reliance of CSS, am I right in saying that tables are no longer used to layout the structure of the site and CSS is now capable of doing this instead? Isn't that actually more complicated?

Correct, tables are no longer used by sensible coders/designers to control the layout/structure of a site. CSS is used for this as you say.

Tables should only be used to present tabular data now. CSS might be a little bit more complicated than using tables but it allows for better sites, quicker loading pages, standards compliance. You can also separate design from content. People can make their own CSS sheets for a site if they so wish, such as high contrast or alternative colour schemes; if a site doesn't already offer any.

Also if you've got to change the layout or design of many pages on a site or many sites then making a change in a single CSS file is a heck of a lot quicker, and easier probably, than having to change each page's table.

Hope this helps as a quick guide. :)

If I'm completely honest Chris, it's not a bad website, but I haven't seen anything that demonstrates a good web/graphic designer. If this is a job you're going to seriously do, then I would focus on polishing your skills first before making a portfolio. It's a tough market to get into and at the moment your skill level is lagging quite considerably behind today's standards.

Newest version is definitely the best. I'm not too fond of the sides of the page though, if it were me I'd have the sides meeting a solid colour and then fading off with a gradient into the background colour. I'm also not fond of solid background colour when the main page section isn't crowded enough as it makes the page look too bland. Is the "Websites" and "Portfolio" things not really the same thing? Also the images that contain text look a little aliased too me.

My thoughts: 1) there are no actual logos on the logos page and no information on what is there and 2) you're kinda selling your soul charging 99£ per site. At that price, the time and dedication needed to produce a worthwhile site just won't get invested.

Don't take the comments badly-most in this thread are coming from pros who have all been where you are at some point, so take note :)
