I've got a rather large idea for a website at the moment which is way beyond what I could code, and I suspect it would take me some time to learn to do what I want the website to do.

Can anyone recommend a design web developer that isn't going to be stupidly expensive? Should I think about doing on a freelance type site to find the work?

I need a bit of a steer as well on what would/wouldn't be possible and the best way to do things.

Hard to give too much advice without the actual details of what you require and what your budget is, etc.

Well...

Full design package really.

- DB Design
- Website and layout design

- ASP.net/PHP Coding
-- Confused.com/Moneysupermarket.com pull of data from other websites (not sure if this is the best idea, need advice on this)
-- Membership/basic social networking

I think the total for all that might fall into "stupidly expensive" :p

Have you had a look for any existing packages that might meet your needs? Could be a way to save money.

What data are you wanting to pull from the sites mentioned? How are you wanting to display it?

tbh I could ask loads of question but it's hard with only a brief description of your project.

Sorry I realise i'm being a bit vague, don't want to give too much away openly.

Essentially the site would be based around a unique for every person, dynamically populated calender. Which isn't too complicated, populating from a database.

The big one I have is where the data is going to come from. There's too much for myself or a couple of people to add, user submitted wouldn't really work, so I was thinking of pulling it from various sites using some sort of code in a way confused.com etc pull together quotes.

It could be done manually but ideally a process would be set up to automate collecting the data I need, but i'm not sure how complex this would be, how legal, or possible.

Which sites/sort of sites is the data coming from? Is this data readily available as rss feeds etc or would it require a deal to be brokered?

I'll have to look into this, i'm talking about ticket websites etc, so possibly a deal would need to be made.

I don't want to input events manually that would create too much of an overhead I think, so I was thinking of a solution outside that.

Ticket master have some data feeds:

Ticketmaster UK Artists
Ticketmaster UK Events
Ticketmaster UK Venues
etc.

If you want something bespoke then talk to these guys http://ww w.codewise.co.uk/product_data_feeds.php

Bespoke will cost more but give you the most flexibility.

Ticket master have an affiilate program with buy.at and they publish the data feeds. They are available in XML, CSV and Pipe Delimited formats.

I've contacted codewise, any others to discuss with?

I'm wary of how much this might cost without an easy way of testing it upfront.

It's going to be expensive if you do it properly.

I appreciate that, I just need to get some rough ideas of what the cost is potentially going to be.

It's not particularly complicated, but i've not done any development for a long time and i'd have a lot to learn first to do it myself.

What you're wanting isn't cheap so if you want it cheap as possible, your only option will be to go and obtain subpar work from one of the links wonder lander posted.

The sort of site you are talking about could easily have a development cost in the region of £500K if the scope is what I think you mean. This is on top of the need to broker deals with all the sites you want to pull data from and the privacy implications of that (there are a few laws you may fall foul of, consider the legal aspect).

The main problem you are going to have is making it appeal to people, why should they use this service? Will it be available on iPhone, windows mobile etc? How are you going to make money from this? Most people wont pay for any service on the web.

I don't think having it appeal is an issue, marketing it etc.

I've got an idea for a site that genuinely hasn't been done, or has been done awfully. If I wanted all of it developing it would be very very expensive.

In terms of brokering deals that isn't required there are existing data feeds, which makes things a lot more straight forward.

In terms of what the site actually does, it's not really complex development in my mind (not that I know how to do it properly!)
