Myself and a housemate were chatting about this website and i proposed that they...

- Webuyany buy car costing £5000 but worth £9000 (assuming the car isn't new).
- Sell car to a car dealership for around £6000 gaining £1000 profit.
- Car dealership sell car to person for around £9000 (market value).

Dunno, just speculating but why else do they buy the cars? What do they do to them?

Sounds a fairly standard business model to me? I'd read on here a few times (but don't have any direct experience) that they offer £xxxx over the phone and then drop it ot £yyyy when you actually turn up. Can't comment if that's true though?

You could get X amount if you sold it yourself.

You'd buy the same car for X + a bit from a dealer, maybe X - a bit from auction

Webuyanycar will give you X - quite a lot, sell it for X - a bit most likely

Only benefit to the seller is convenience, more likely that they just don't know any better.

WBAC are a joke with some cars and not for others.

For example, I paid £6750 for my S2000. its an 02 with 68k miles on the clock. They will give me £6,100 for it. So not too bad!

And when you turn up they will give you £4k.

Are S2000's REALLY that cheap now ? I thought they were around £10k

If it's utterly pristine, and I mean not a mark or a scuff or a dribble of coolant/oil/washer fluid in the engine bay...no swirls in the paintwork...

...then they will STILL not give you the price they quoted on the phone.

:)

That's not actually the case for the most part - I've seen several instances where they have paid quoted price for the vehicles - although there does tend to be an administrative fee of about £50-75 for the transaction :)

As you can imagine though, those kind of cars are few and far between - most people are, as usual, overly optimistic with regards to the condition of their vehicles.

"It's MINT mate"....... ;)

Why would they sell it on to a dealership? Wouldn't they just sell it on for themselves as they are part of Carcraft (or one of those supermarket things)?

It's just Carcraft in reverse. Why people cannot see this and leave it alone I don't know. You never get something for nothing in this world.

I will also buy any car - for £10.

It's not even in the same league as Carcraft. As someone said earlier in this thread, they will sometimes give a pretty decent quote and in those circumstances I'd rather sell to them than have to advertise privately and have to deal with any number of ***** tyre kickers. Yeah you might get a little less but if you want a quick, hassle free sale, then I can't see any issues with them.

I disagree. The one time somebody on here said they got a good deal it turned out a 'good deal' was infact about £1000 under book price - on a £4k car!

How can you say they are not in the same league as Carcraft when to my understanding they are the same organisation?

Clearly a good deal to some is not a good deal to the majority.

However, if people are aware of the effective price they're paying and happy to do it in return for the service they get (i.e. zero effort selling a car), then there's nothing wrong with it.

The service works on ignorance. People beleive they are getting a good deal, so they are happy. This doesn't make it a good deal in reality. What these people dont realise is that if they put the car in the local paper for just £500 more than the offer they get they would sell it to the first person to call who'd just take it because it would still be loads cheaper..

Lazy ignorant people deserve to pay the price. What's the alternative - government intervention? No thanks.

If you don't like them, don't use them.

Webuyanycar is just furthering the sacrifice many make by choosing trade-in over private sale, namely sacrificing cash for convenience.

If they can make a business model of it, well, good for them.
