Getting married this December and we were just thinking of doing an ipod playlist. Or taking my server and an ipad so guests can create a playlist for the evening.

Obviously this is a nice cheap option as we already have all the equipment.

However recently my Fiance has been looking into live bands to perform at night. One of the main concerns is the lack of atmosphere using an ipod playlist as theres no dj/performer to get the crowd going.

What do people think? Is an ipod ok or would you recommend getting something a bit extra aswell?

If the ipad idea doesn't get an atmosphere going, put on Dirty by Christina Aguilera and get the bridesmaids to give everyone lap dances. Would definitely get an atmosphere going then.

Alternatively, get a DJ in so you don't get people putting on 10 songs in a row that no-one but them likes.

Get a DJ but make sure he doesn't play random crap. Some weddings they play whatever they want and think is good but people just don't care.

The server and computer idea (along with a PA system) so people can enque music they want to listen to is a really good idea, providing that you have a large catalogue of music. A premium Spotify subscription might make sense. You'll need to set some rules to avoid someone putting on loads of songs though and sort out software which enques rather than plays, though a macro on your mouse button would probably do this for you.
I'd get a microphone hooked up to it as well so people can have a spot of playing DJ as well. It might work, it might fall flat on it's face but it'll probably be fun and quite humorous. Though people might just give up after the first hour...
Could you write a program, or find one, that allows people to text/email songs that they want and then the computer will play it? That'll be good!

Wedding DJs are terrible.

Get me in man. I'll blast out a tune or two. You ken I'm worth the money.

Aye min, pure banging choons ken fit I mean pal?

Do not go down the ipod route.

I've been to a wedding and the DJ was shocking, he just sat there in his chair and was on his laptop all the time the music was playing, he paid no interest to the guests or the wedding couple and I can only think the ipod rout would be just the same, ie no involvement and you are relying on the guests to do the work.

In a clapped out old renault 19?

Absolutely, i'll even put some ribbon on the front and a horseshoe around the interior mirror and draw a loveheart on the bonnet etc. You'd love it! ;) :D

Was at a birthday party a few weeks ago with accompanying DJ, and I would also re-iterate as someone said about checking/giving playlist btw...

I've booked a band for my wedding next year a good live band is well worth the money. I've been to quite a few weddings this year and those with live bands always had the best atmosphere
