Heading to a wedding evening party at the weekend, and not entirely sure what people tend to wear to these things.

Is it suit, dressy trousers + shirt + tie, or jeans and a shirt?

Whats the normal thing to wear?

How about asking the couple what they would prefer? Last time I went to one was straight after the wedding so had no options other than the kilt and full dress outfit that I was wearing anyway.

If you're just going for the evening then I'd go with relatively smart still (decent trousers, shirt, shoes etc) unless advised otherwise and maybe put a tie on, it isn't hard to take off if/when required.

Yup. Ask or you run the risk of unintentionally making a dreadful mistake. Give them a call and ask what's appropriate :)

unless someone said otherwise I would go in trousers and shirt, jeans would not be acceptable imo

Agreed.

90% of people will still be dressed in there suit from the actuall wedding.

Trousers with a shirt, sometimes a tie if i'm in the mood. and never ever trainers. Smart Shoes.

Depends on the married couple. If it's Lord and Lady Fauntleroy having an evening do at the local country manor with butlers serving vintage champagne you may want to dress up. If it's just your standard wedding of people you know, I wouldn't say it's a problem turning up in smart jeans, shirt, shoes. People will be half-cut by then anyway, probably sat round tables drinking wine or hovering around the dance floor while cheesey music plays. No one will care if you're in jeans.
