Wedding Rings - Paying a lot Vs Not so much

The size of the ring does not equal the size of the love.

You want to talk about quoted for truth!?!?!?

As I said above, my wife and I have been married 14 years on Wednesday and our rings cost us the equivilant of 50 quid for both.....

My wife lost her engagement ring about 15 years ago and when she told her mates they all felt sorry and wondered what I would say about it. She told them I wouldn't give a toss because its a piece of metal.

Titanium is quite a different colour, plus the weight difference is noticable (titanium being lighter). It's nice in it's own way but IMO they aren't really comparable.

They are both silver (coloured)

Well it's off to the opticians for me then! I looked at platinum rings for my wedding and they just look silver to me as does my friends platinum ring.

<edit>
Having seen the platinum inlays they do at titaniumera, granted they are different but surely we are talking shades here rather than colours? From a distance i wouldn't be able to identify whether a silver coloured ring is indeed silver, white gold, platinum, titanium etc

I found titanium to be a lot duller than platinum and white gold to be a lot, er, whiter. From a distance then I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but if I was sitting next to someone, or across the table then I would.

That's pretty irrelevant though, because you'd be able to tell the difference and that's what counts since you should be buying what you like, not to impress other people; unless that is what you like.

When I was looking I found titanium to be to light and I was't a fan of the colour. I hate gold and white gold so it was either silver to platinum. Eventually I decided that I was just looking because it was what most people I knew did when they got married. I realised that I didn't really feel comfortable with a ring on so I didn't bother and saved £600.

Just buy a nice white gold ring with a fake diamond in,
NEVER buy diamonds.

Why shouldnt you buy diamonds?

I wouldnt dare do anything like that at all. End of the day I plan to be with my gf forever so I dont want my sign of eternal comitment to be represented by something half arsed and fake!

On a side not does any one know of any shops(near bradford/leeds)/oline shops that sell certified diamonds without the stupid mark up you generally find? Or does anyone know mucha bout what import tax I would face (bar VAT) if I imported one from the US?

Thanks for all the posts - it has made for an interesting (well certainly to me) thread.
Also thanks for not just assuming that it was a "I've just spent xxx on a ring aren't I big & clever" kind of post.
That was never my intention as I said at the beginning.

I won't say we've tried to do the wedding on a shoe-string budget however at the same time we've never said that money is no object.
I'm thankfully in the situation where we are already buying our own house, so we don't need to save up for a deposit there.
We like to have some money in the Building Society for "emergencies" - if I was made redundant the mortgage still needs paying etc.

Whilst planning for the wedding we had both initially thought that we would be paying around £300 - £350 each for the rings.
Good quality yellow gold - as you'll see from the initial post we have gone over-budget on this.
We've stayed "within budget" on everything else and all our guests should have a great time as will we.

I fully agree with everyone who has said that the cost of the ring shouldn't really matter - it is the gesture that you are making.
I guess my initial question and worry was that I was spending a lot (especially on my ring) and really how different was it from one that looked similar in another shop for less money - 18crt gold is 18crt gold.
On retrospect I now see that the ring I've chosen is the style I like and want to wear for the rest of my life.
It is good quality etc, I'm sure I'm getting "plenty of gold for my money".

Cheers.
