OK, so in 3 weeks my contract is up and I'm out of a job, I've got decent savings and intend to take around a month off from work as I have things to do and in that time I am considering taking a week and going somewhere new as I haven't left the country in some time.

I've never been to New York and it's always held an interest for me so I thought why the hell not, tickets aren't stupidly expensive and hostels are cheap as chips.

All I plan on doing is seeing the sites and doing a bit of shopping for random crap. Empire State Building, Museums, Statue of Liberty, possible a Helicopter ride if they do them in January, Central Park and that sort of thing.

So, is this a good idea? Can anyone offer some advice or give me some tips on what to do/see or places to stay?

Hell yes!

Mate did this and had a great time. Check where your hostel is though :D

Go to the Manchester pub on 49th and 2nd :p

NY is an awesome city :)

Realistically I can't imagine going on my own, but it completely depends what kind of person you are! Only you will know if you will cope on your own well and/or meet new people easily :)

a week is maybe to long in NY , maybe split it with New jersey or something like that ....... or maybe Atlanta for the casinos ..... NY is awesome but you can see most of it in 3- 4 days , well that was the case 8- 9 years ago......

Definitely do it. I would love to go to the 'big city' and just dissapear into the crowd, get immersed into the culture and see the sights :)

Don't really care for asia to be honest, has never interested me.

Oddly enough I am also considering The Ukraine, Kiev specificaly.

I went to Kiev and Dnipropetrovsk in October. Kiev was quality - a really beautiful place with plenty to see and do. People were friendly too when engaged in conversation (typical East European cold shoulder until you say hello!). Beer was cheap and the food excellent for very little cash. Also you don't need a visa if you're an EU passport holder.

Given the choice between Kiev and NYC however, I'd personally go for NYC. Either way I'm sure you'll have an awesome time.

There's plenty of history (much of it harrowing) related to the war in Kiev too. We did a day trip to Chernobyl as well: different (and scary) but interesting.
