I've got a week or two off next week (changing job) and fancy doing something. I thought about a drive to the Highlands but feel a few nights there alone may be pretty boring so looking for other recommendations. I think flights anywhere would be pretty pricey, but you never know.

Looking for : interesting stuff, good food (casual food as I'll be on my tod), good beer and bars, stuff to do at night, not too expensive.

Not sure if I could get a cheap B&B or hostel in a northern English city?

Perhaps a cheap ferry to the continent and back from Newcastle for example? I think all ferries from Scotland have been or going to be axed due to lack of commercial traffic.

Ferry to Belfast?

Budapest. It's dirt cheap and a great party city, loads of travellers there and very UK friendly. When you don't feel like revelling it's got great history with awesome architecture and weird sort of soviet stuff everywhere.

So, the trouble with flights is that they are super expensive. I'm tempted to give the 'turn up to the airport and see what's what' tactic a go, but I don't really belive it rewards.

So, the UK. And drivable. I'm thinking Newcastle...

You can quite easily get flights for £100 return. Alternatively look on travelzoo or last minute.com, there should be plenty of breaks for £300-400.
