Looks awesome, some nice craftmanship in there. I'd love to own something like that (but more specifically, a pinball table which would be less easy to craft )

However - is that a widescreen monitor? Surely most games released in the 90s were standard TV aspect ratio back then.

Yeah thats right its a 20" samsung lcd monitor, the emulators support custom resolutions aswell as standard ratios, i just run the emulators in standard form but set the front end on a Widescreen resolution, the old mame games like pacman, asteroids dont look very good in WS format.......

I tryed this frontend for a short time but prefere the Maximus Arcade setup due to its simple setup and customization, its just my own opinion but think that the hyperspin frontend looks a little to cluttered, its a good program tho.........

Hey just thought ad share some more updated pics for you all, well eventually got my marquee, took nearly 5 weeks from when i ordered to eventually get here but it was worth the wait plus been working on the control panel, the X-Arcade is a very good unit but thought ad have a bash at creating my own and its turned out really well altho it was time consuming and it tryd my patience with all the wiring and drilling but im finally happy with the build heres the pics........................

This is the marquee and sega frontend plus the custom CP

I'm uploading some more pics now.

It is a horn, it's quite small for a horn as it's for midbass (100hz -1Khz)...

Bass horns (below 100Hz) are a lot bigger, they tend to be around 9 cubic feet!

Ok so first update been working on the unit today and been geting on really well, got the door cut out and mounted, took the centre section out of the door so i can put a perspex sheet behind it so as to show the LED's and the workings of the pc, should have a nice glow effect to it, just made up a template and routered the door to the size of the pc case.



The next step was to make the hidaway keyboard shelf, got the runners fitted to the unit and all works fine at the moment, the front of the drawer is just held together just now as i will have to put small cabinet hinges to it so the front panel folds down for easy access to the mouse and keyboard.


Quite a good days work with no distractions thankfully, next step is to mount the speakers to the roof of the unit, thats tommorrows plan tho lol time to relax with a beer now and plan what to do with the controler setup

So where in scotland you living? just so me and a fe other can come round for a shot lol

It took ages, mainly due all the panels being angled cuts... and most panels being a funny shape. I need to build another when I get the time...

I still need to round off the edges and give it a lick of paint, floor paint is supposed to be pretty hard wearing...

That's pretty cool MH79. I used to do discos and built my own kit as well. I know all about folded horns being huge, you have that niggling dilema where you either have to get small really powerful kit or really huge efficient less powerful kit

I had a pair of 15" horns I built which were awesome, but I used cheap drivers and I always had problems transporting them because they were so big, so when they blew I swapped to a single 18" with a 1050W rms power amp on the end to lay the smack down. Took me ages to pick the driver because I wanted one that could deliver the low frequencies but I needed one with a enough low Q so I could squeeze it in a tiny box.

I still have the 18 today. I could never bring myself to sell a driver that big that cost so much

Yep those 18"'s are pricey, the PD1850 is around £350 which tend to be used in the larger horns... 1000W going thru any 18 is going to shift some air tho, horn or non-horn.

I'm going down the high efficiency route it seems... I've also built a bass horn which goes down to 30Hz, it uses a tapped horn design which is a pretty recent development in the horn world. Pics in this post: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11579022&postcount=37 I've used high power 12" drivers for the the bass and mids, but I eventually plan to build bass horns with 15" drivers as a single 15" driver horn will put out as much as 2 x 12" driver horns... I'm gonna tune the boxes to 40Hz also as they won't be 6ft tall then!

Once I get a few more speakers finished and painted I plan to do similar stuff to discos... Soundsystems for local dance nights, nothing massive tho. I'll have to get some sort of van or trailer tho, there's no way you could get many speakers in a pokey little Pug 205!

It's pretty satisfying being able to make your own kit, often you'll know it's limits better compared to someone who just went out and got something off the shelf.

My main transport was my mate's Mk1 Fiesta so that was the benchmark for the size of kit, I had regular work so I could justify the cost of the speaker and I put it on castors to roll it around

You could make one for your Xbox 360 or PS3, like the ones they have in the Game computer shops.

25mm xmax I know what you mean about the earthquake feeling, right now I'm giving around 500W to the 30Hz horn as the driver is rated at 600W rms, and it's crazy the amount of bass you get, different things all over the house rattle with different bass notes! One song will make the kitchen cupboards rattle while another will make the entire front door shake!

It's not a cheap hobby but I think that the gear will pay for itself if the work is there. Kudos for managing to stuff your whole rig in a Mk1 Fiesta tho, impressive to say the least! Castors are a good idea, right now I've got some sack trucks but they don't work too well when you come across stairs...

Hehe, the 12" drivers I'm using are Eminence Definimax 4012, and I've experienced the same thing, according to the specs the xmax is only 6mm but I've found the cone moves much more than that when watching it. I quite like Eminence drivers as they are well made and their specs are normally pretty accurate.

The xlim spec shows how far the cone will move before the suspension bottoms out, meaning there is a lot of cone travel then the xmax spec. It's a one way measurement meaning if Xlim is 16mm then the cone will move up to 16mm in each direction giving 32mm of movement.

The Xmax limit is when the voicecoil is no longer in the magnet gap, meaning exceeding Xmax won't really cause damage but it may add a little harmonic distortion which isn't a huge issue with bass (in fact some people prefer it). Exceeding Xlim however is much worse and can tear the surround, spider or in the worst case cause the driver to catch fire tho I've never managed this myself (touch wood)!
