I recently had to order some more whey from myprotein and decided to order some extra suplements to try, only some small amounts just to test, the problem is i now realize i am not sure how to measure the ammounts i need.

The suplements i got was green tea extract pills (1 a day should be enough), taurine, and guarana. Now, from what i read taurine should be 1g to 3g, 30 min before a working, and guarana should be 500mg to 2.5g 45 min before. The problem is that i thought i read that 1 teaspoon is 2.5g, and a heaped teaspoon is 5g, but for what substance is this measurement for? I ordered 100g of both taurine and guarana, and i recieved 3x as much guarana as i did taurine, so if taurine weighs 3x less, how do i know how much to use of each when measuring with a teaspoon, as a teaspoon of one is different from a teaspoon of the other.

i put 2 teaspoons of taurine in. but then im a bit bigger than the average bear!

I'm confused by your post. You ordered 100g of taurine and guarana but you got 3x times more guarana?

If you had two bags both weighing 100g then the taurine would look bigger as guarana is quite a fine powder. Taurine is light and kind of fluffy.

Be very careful with guarana!! Don't guess and I certainly wouldn't take anywhere near 2.5g.... 500mg is plenty and it's a very small amount.

So you've bought these supps without really knowing much about what dosages you need or what you're doing? :/ Don't guess... and be honest to yourself when you test them.

The taurine i got is like a realy fine white powder, very fine. the guarana on the other hand is much lumpier, and has the feel of flower and seems much lighter then the taurine, hence the larger ammount of guarana to reach the 100g mark.

I have read about the dosages, and the packges even list their suggested dosages on them. The only thing i didn't think of is that a spoonfull of taurine weighs more then a spoonfull of guarana, i wrongfully assumed that a level teaspoon is 2.5g no matter what the subtance its measuring, it was only when i opened the package i realized my stupid mistake.

I've got an order of taurine due anyday now, it's been a while since I bought any. What you describe is not taurine as I know it, it looks like fibre glass, like little shards of glass. So much so that a customer came on MP and caused a huge scare as he was going mental that he had glass in one of his supplements.... turned out he was talking about the taurine lol :D

If you take a teaspoon of guarana you will regret it and it lasts for hours! One of those caps of green tea you have would be 500mg of guarana, that's how little you need.

I didn't mean to fly off the handle, I just don't want you to go mad with supps and not understand the effects that they may have on you that's all. :)

Thanks, I'll try and start with 500mg then and see how i go. As for the taurine, looking at it up very close i guess it does almost look like very small fibres, it is almost tasteless, only a slight flavour to it which i cant quite describe, not a bad taste though.

If taurine is supposed to look bigger 1g for 1g, I hope i have been sent the correct stuff. Having no prior experience I am learning some of this as i go.

I don't intend to go mad with them :). Personaly i would like to do as much as i can with just good old fashioned willpower, but due to curiosity i thought i would give them a little try. I picked guarana, taurine and green tea extract because they seem to be some of the supplements with some scientific research backing them up, unlike a lot of supplements which seem to offer unbeleavable effects, and dont have much to back it up.

What does tha Guarana do? I remember there was a Boost with it in back in the day.

The last lot of taurine I got was as Chong says, little shards of glass

I did the same a few years ago. Just do it wisely and be honest with the results you may or may not get. They're not all useless some can provoke great results, with smart training, diet and knowledge.

Another way to see if it's taurine is put some on your tongue and then take a sip of water. It will just dissapper (and no I don't mean wash down your throat lol) it dissolves super fast, weird feeling first time it does it.

Guarana is a stimulant but it's not as sharp or instant as caffeine, it's a more gradual lift but it lasts a lot longer and doesn't just drop you like a strong coffee.

A good example is thinking of guarana like Oats (a complex slow release carb) compared to caffeine like Sugar (a simple fast carb)

that's why i like shoppin' from bulkpowders.
they've got measure scoops from 0.5 ml to 150ml, and actually tell you how much of a 5ml scoops is in grams of each substance. :p
It was only 4 or 5 months ago that I found out 1 scoop of dextrose weighs almost twice as much as one of maltodextrin.:D

Exactly. Training results depend on many things and even if one is slacking it can be massively detrimental.

Train hard, train smart and train religiously,
Rest adequately,
Eat well, diet is so important I can't stress enough just how important.

Get those 3 nailed and you will hit your goals, no supp's required.

All supplements will do is make life more convenient, sometimes save you money if you're smart... cost you a fortune if you aren't. They can help hit goals a little quicker and certainly help when cutting and trying to drop bodyfat.

But slack on any of the big 3 and supp's are a waste of time and money, just like your gym membership fee ;)

Ah, so if you eat the perfect diet and train perfectly then suddenly supplements start to work! load of cobblers :)

I say don't waste your valuable time with Pseudoscience. Its obsessive...and it definitely aint cool ;)

Are you referring to CWs post?
He said the complete opposite, that if you nail the big 3 then you wont need supps :p

No one in particular, but there seems to be a myth that if you train and eat like a pro then supplements suddenly start to work for you.

yeah, seeing it more here even when people are saying very different.

most supps 'work' best when the diet isnt up to scratch. i say work loosely though :p

well it depends, I definitely felt a huge difference from creatine and glutamine, although I had a reasonable diet. same with green tea, although I take tiny amounts before workouts I definitely feel more lively throughout gym sessions.

of course, provided you've got a perfect diet, then protein shakes, maltodextrin, dextrose and weight gainers will not make much of a difference.
