hi.

i dont really have time to go gym etc.. (btw never been to gym)

so im guessing ill buy some weights to train at home.

anyone know wheres the best place to get dumbbells? (cheaper the better.. but what is best recommended?)

also..if i were to start, what should i do? build up which part first? (e.g. six pack, arms etc.)

thanks

your very limited to what you can do with just cheap dumbells.

why dont you just do body exercises, sit ups, press ups, chin up's, pull, ups, bridges, etc.

Save your cash, go to the gym.

Before you buy anything I suggest you spend a month or two lurking in SA. You'll learn a lot and save yourself buying twice.

You've lots to learn about the body, how it responds to training, nurtition, periodisation, recovery, form & technique, intensity, volume etc.

Jumping in at the deep end would be a bit foolish imo. If however you cba to learn about all this then you're not going to make great progress and would be better off just paying £20 a month and finding the time to go to a gym.

When I started out I bought a 31kg barbell and dumbell set from Argos for £20. Then bought 2 x 10kg discs for £10. After about a month I bought another set and another pair of 10kg discs. Total cost including a bench £120.

Still have them too

Check out http://scoobysworkshop.com/ and his youtube page (scooby1961) he has a lot of sensible things to say about doing weight training and body building for the beginner and advanced alike. No bs from this fellow (except perhaps some of his jokes hehe) - everything from what kit to use/look out for, to workouts and correct form to prevent injury, and some of what you don't want to be spending money on... look at the 'hall of shame' on his website for a giggle :p
Well worth reading/watching imo.

I got some of my weights from argos - they're cheap, but that's the whole point... it shouldn't cost loads of money, just some basic kit and the proper form and motivation to stay fit at home without expensive gadgets and gym subs.
My goal is not to be a brick outhouse, just stay fit and motivated ;)

Obviously if you're gonna' get serious about weight training, then a gym might be the way to go, but if you're just wanting to get fit at home then there's lots of advice on the above site and elsewhere that will tell you all you need to know about how to decide what you want to achieve and how to go about it safely and with realistic goals.
Good place exercise wise to start is pressups, crunches (situps), pullups and jogging/skipping rope/cycling etc.

thanks for the advise...yh gym is basically the best option

yh..maybe weight training sounded too big lol...i was meaning to say i wanted to bulk up a bit so that i could get toned in the muscles and abs etc xD (not like them big muscled up guys)

but lemme explain more detail lol:

basically, i have college on monday to thursday sometimes till 5pm and some till 3. when i get home, i go to work till 11pm. this is prob everyday lol.

friday - Sunday, also work... till 11pm. so no time.

only time left is from 11pm till 1-2am? (3 hours?!?!?! T_T)

so cant really go gym =( ..tbh ...i havent been out to play football for months =( ..

so the only way is to get some weights and train at home =( ...unless anyone has some other suggestions i could do =)

so argos is an ok place to get dumbbells from? something like this:

Pro Power 18kg Cast Dumbbell Set

also are ankle/wrist weights any good? (could be helpful to and from college)

Well, not with a low weight set of dumbells only.
The weight will become light very quick.
Also you are saying that you are very restricted for time, that's not good.

By all means get some weights and a chin bar, you will be able to do some exercise :)

You should spend around 40-60 mins every training session. A 3day regime would be a good start. E.g a full body workout monday, wednesday, and friday. You could stick to mostly oblique exercises (weightless basically). Things like pushups, chin ups, reverse crunches etc. Adding some adjustable dumbells or kettlebells would be wise imo. If you can afford it, buy a decent bench. Not that crappy 110kg max one from argos. Between your own bodyweight and your dumbells, it won't take long for you to go over 110kg in total weight. If you can get to a gym, it'll be well worth it.

I'm not an expert, infact a beginner so am in no position to tell you exactly what to do. You'll need a good training plan that you can stick to, and a good diet. Without them, you're not going anywhere.

To get 'toned' you have to have low bodyfat. Your muscles don't get toned by training, they simpley get bigger. To get nice abs/arms all you need is some muscle (not loads, but enough), and low bodyfat. You need to work your whole body, not just arms/abs. This mens your shoulders, back, and legs, in order to get results. If you just train upper body, you'll see very little progress.

Check out this site to see Alan (he has an account on this forum, rico_uk), he is a perfect examle of someone with low bodyfat, he doesn't look good just because he has a lot of muscle, it's because he has little bodyfat.

i have low bodyfat ..so thats gd. =)

as for a decent bench..i dont think il have room for that =/
only dumbells since there small ...

o yh...i basically do 50 pressups everyday? dno if that made any progress but its a start =/ (guess need to work on crunches too)

since we're the same (beginners) .. what training plan are u suggesting/or even using?
