Weightlifting

The weightlifting was the highlight of the day for me yesterday. Those little ladies are seriously impressive. You can't help but feel their pain when they miss a lift. You get such an emotional bond with the athletes in those two hours which is unusual in most sports.

It's on again today from 2pm with more ladies and the men.

:( , glad I didn't see it and won't be looking for a video of that. Unfortunately saw pictures of the leg break in the gymnastics and that made me feel horrible. A bad tackle in football or a bad landing in gymnastics always looks bad but in weightlifting it's usually horrific looking.

Did see some highlights from the main program of a guy winning a gold by breaking the world record, his celebration and his coaches were so, silly, and genuine, just pure joy, amazing to see moments like that.

That world record lift though. He already had silver and needed to make up 12kg on the gold from the snatch, had two attempts left so he just said why not, let's give it a go. Got it on the first try :o

Unfortunately people are raising questions about a previous doping ban and the history of Kazakhstan's weightlifting programme, but I hate to assume guilt before anything's proven.

Most of their team for these games were banned, including the GOAT Ilya got from retrospective sampling using new techniques testing positive. Typically when records are broken, especially looooong-standing ones like that <77kg C'n'J one it's by one or two kilos, not 8kg or whatever it was. That said at this level all the competitors will be on something, I guess there's just using some drugs and alllllll the drugs.

It was 4kg, 7kg up on his previous competition best. If he is cheating I'm sure it'll be uncovered in time, but to assume so automatically pretty much ruins sports for me. If you can just say everyone you don't like is dirty and everyone you do happen to like is clean it leads to a way of thinking where your team has to be morally justified to win, which is just against the spirit of good sportsmanship and cooperation that the Olympics is founded on. It was a pretty amazing spectacle to watch, if it's going to be marred then I'd prefer it to be through facts rather than speculation.

Men's 105kg at 7.30pm and Group A gold final at 11pm. Should be great! I believe those times are GMT, not Rio times.

Yes unfortunately the group B events have not any commentary on them so far. I doubt that will change at this late stage. So 11pm is the one to watch with Michaela Breeze's commentary and the better lifters.
