Weights at home

Manufacture and type of steel play a big role in the behaviour of the bar: forging a bar that will wind up as a higher content martensite steel (strong and flexible) is hard work and expensive.

That makes sense. I'm not necessarily saying the prices are "bad" because they're more anyway, things have their prices, even if they aren't worth it on a pro-rata basis. Supply, demand and other companies not offering something of the same spec for significantly less, or rather market rate play huge roles in pricing.

However, Eleiko are expensive because they are Eleiko. It is possible to get perfectly awesome bars for half the money or even less. Pendlay, ivanko and Taishan are all vrry skmilar quality for a much lower price bracket.

This makes sense, and I thought as much, I was also under the impression that the majority of places that buy Eleiko were "federation" or official Olypmic gym types of places, where the cost can be justified, to some extent anyway.

I am actually quite interested in getting bumper plates though, they just look that much nicer, and them being all (mostly) the same diameter is a nice plus.

If you go to a decent gym then yeah to replicate that at home it's going to cost you a fair bit. The gym I went to had pretty dated equipment so it was a step up for me when I bought my own stuff.

There's a gym fairly close to mine, where it seems most of the equipment is older than me, AND tatty. It also STINKS and I STANK of there last time I went, so I haven't been back since. It smelt so bad, it was putting me off lifting. :o

I go to an exercise for less now, and it's actually by far the best gym I've been to for free weights despite costing a fraction of the price of others.

Yeahhhhh I'm not exactly setting the world on fire with lifting so not needing to spend a massive amount just yet, I'm not in the league of you guys and probably wont be for some time!

2nd day today (only lifting every other day) and did 1x5 20kg deadlift, 5x5 15kg squat hacks and 5x5 15kg overhead press....the overhead press was the only one towards the end I was struggling on.

I'm at the start of lifting here, as you can tell by the weights, my goal at the moment is to continue to get my weight down (aiming for 14st, maybe 13.5) and build by strength. Right now a Gym really isn't an option due to fresh newborn.

Next year I will probably be joining a gym, but for now I want to continue on my fitness journey and not lose momentum, I just feel really great about myself for the first time in probably 10 years and don't want to lose it.

To the question of 1700 a day, this is if I have a rest day with no exercise. Today for instance I consumed 2247, but did 763 worth on my bike after my lifts, so my allowance would be 2463.

That said, I think I will up it. My aim was 1.5lbs a week, but I am actually currently hitting 2.6 (lost 8lbs in 3 weeks). This is because today is pretty typical of the last 3 weeks in that I am coming in ~100-200 under target once you add on my cardio.
