if you already have a microserver why not run pf sense in a VM? no need for the edgerouter lite that way. what OS are you using windows server or windows pro?

Neither, xpenology but regardless id rather have an uninterrupted hardware solution. Right now i can do anything i like to the server and not disrupt the rest of the home network. I woudlnt compromise that by forcing all the routing through the server - I'd rather have a hardward solution built to do the job

your free to choose the best setup for your needs. I think an all in one solution is better than running 2-3 different devices.

I'm not suggesting you rethink this. I was just wondering as i knew you were looking at ubiquity recently. Like i said i did it all with one box a while ago but it's not for me

Another thing im going to do is get a m2 ssd (nvme) a cheap £70 one just for pure performance. Will be for the os and programs only. Will use mechanical for storage. I want this thing to fly. Purely custom built with speed in mind. Im just not convinced the cheap ubiquiti routers can handle a lot of connections. My SH3 seems to hang on my phone at times and its meant to be the best virgin have released so far.

Looks like im going to have to spend top dollar on a mobo so i have enough pci-e slots for everything

all of the superhubs are flawed.

off the top of my head I've got 15 or so devices in regular use, most of them wireless but some are wired, and my asus rt-n56 has no issues with it. That's probably more than the average on an 'old' asus. Why do you think an carrier class ubiquity would have a problem with a home setup?

I still dont think your making the wrong decision if you want it all in one box, but i would suggest you head over to the ubiquity thread and ask those guys what the edgerouters are really capable of because i think you are really underestimating them.

no doubt they are good but the lite is around £85. Asus, Belkin, TP link routers in the past have cost more albeit they did come with wi-fi built in too. If it is that good at that price then why isn't everyone using them? I'm just a bit sceptical. Why doesn't small net builder review their products? Is it because they are too techy for a home user? I didn't realise they had their own forums I'll have a look about.

I think I will go this way to begin with and if I find it too fiddly I can always buy a lite for £85. I need the server anyway and I need a new HTPC capable of 4K.

I believe it does by displayport but not by HDMI only 24hz which I suppose is enough for tv and movie content which what I'll be using it for. So I will hold off on the GPU for now.

Perfect CPU for a HTPC if it works out.
