Weird Brake Problem

I've just been to Frimley Hospital (from NW London) and when I braked leaving the M3 I was a bit shocked cos I had to put the pedal all the way to the floor to slow myself down. Normally as soon as I hit the pedal I can feel the brakes working. I was going to phone the breakdown bods after my appointment but decided to try it before I did. The brakes worked fine and I've just driven all the way back with no problems. There is plenty of brake fluid and I only had the car serviced 2 weeks ago and was told the brakes were fine. Anyone got any ideas on what's the likely cause of this? It's never happened to me before in almost 20 years of driving. I'm going to ting the garage that did my service but I bet they can't see me for ages!

i would get them checked out asap, may need a bleed!

Just been to the garage and the guy couldn't find anything wrong. There's no leaks or smell and it all seems to be working fine now. The mechanic just told me to take it back if it does it again.

The wife's driving it all next week and I'd hate anything to happen when she's driving it (note to self - check wife's insurance policy :D)

Sometimes the bores in the braking system wear themselves slightly oval. This is fine until the piston or rubber seal turns a bit out of line with the bore and fluid just passes by and your pedal goes right down. Same can happen if the bore is scored and the rubber seal has worn itself into it.

You probably just need to replace the master cylinder.
