HI

Started having a weird issue, seems to crash/black screens on both monitors, shortly after booting or sometimes when idle, never in game, but when the screens goes black i can still hear the game in background and people in discord.
I have a decent 1000 corsair psu, along with the 5950x cpu and 3080

I have tried rolling back overclocks on the ram from 3600 to 3000 and also removed the PBO overclock on cpu but still happening.

I suspect gpu as can still hear game when black screens what you guys think?

thanks

As you appear to have ruled out the cpu, any overclock on the 3080?
I”ve had similar from a number of things-
GPU overclock too high
GPU running too hot, maybe check the fans
RAM failing/errors

Heh, I sometimes get since I switched the gaming pc to other side of the room and a very long cable.
I would try new cable, then memtest.
After that default any overclocks, run bechmarks see if you can force the error. Any windows error logs as well.

Have you tested with just 1 monitor and see if it happens?

When did the issue start? was there any hardware changes or has it started since adding a 2nd monitor?

You say it never happens in game but then say you can hear the game in the background?

As above return the GPU to stock if it's not ATM and do a clean driver install using DDU to get rid of the old drivers

First thing I would do I go back to a single monitor for a while and see if it happens again.

Also is there anything in event viewer to give you a clue what's going on?

good suggestions about trying a single monitor i will do that, when i said never in game its like 99% of the time not in game or sometimes very occasionally when loading a game,

It happens very often as soon as windows starts and i am loading up discord and web browser,

My gpu and processor running at stock atm. I have downclocked my RAM to test but no difference.

Just seems weird i can hear my son speak in discord after the 2 montiors have turned black and then a few seconds later restarts PC normally after this first restart the PC will be fine until i finished with it for the day. Not seeing any cpu, ram or lights flashing on motherboard when crashing and getting strange WHEA errors that when googled could be softward or hardware. i will update when home later and it does it again specific errors.

Just seems like a gpu issue as its not stopping all the pc at same time, i.e montiors go black when can still hear talking in discord etc.

What are they? WHEA errors are usually overclock or undervolt related due to CPU/memory instability, or due to BIOS issues, though some of them are harmless.

its fair to say i dont really know what to look for, i seeem to get this error a lot buit not sure if its after i rebooted up or the cause

The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Secure Boot is not enabled on this machine..

also Event 41 this one it says is critical, the one above error?

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

am i looking int he right place?

also found this one from yesterdays crash

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000116 (0xffffa08fcdbe2460, 0xfffff80a385c1120, 0xffffffffc000009a, 0x0000000000000004). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\082224-11203-01.dmp. Report Id: d46160b9-b9dd-4f17-bf9f-4903ebd9b8e0.

this one was event 1001

That error isn't very helpful, it just reports that you crashed.

What do the WHEA errors say? Those are the ones I'm most interested in.

Sounds like junk.

Probably more junk.

The Google Chrome Elevation Service (GoogleChromeElevationService) service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
Missing files has me go "hmm", worth taking note of for the future since it could indicate SSD problems or memory corruption, but more likely that it is also junk.

completely reformatted after the crashing caused issues so couldnt boot into windows, but still doing it, just come up with this error

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
Processor APIC ID: 8

WHEA-Logger event iid 18

is this a core failing, i have set the PBO to all 0 no negative at all anything i can change scalar?

Finally i can put this to bed, like the poster above i tried a positve curve but still happened, so after a lot of reading i found a video with someone who had same issue, so turns out disabling C-States cures it, and am glad to say no more crashes, aparently this is to save power when not playing games etc? so how much can i expect my energy bill to increase?

thanks for all your help anyway

so how much can i expect my energy bill to increase?
You can measure it yourself with something like hwinfo portable, but generally: the clocks/volts do have an impact, though the CPU can still power down when it isn't under load, so the impact won't be the difference between like... 20 watts or 200 watts, it might be say, 20 to 40 watts.

so turns out disabling C-States cures it, and am glad to say no more crashes
Not entirely uncommon with these CPUs, some users only fixed it by an RMA.
