Hey guys, i cleaned my car yesterday and it was all fine, but today i went to start it up and some weird things occured.

I lowered the handbrake, and put it into reverse, the car sort of "rocked" when i did this. I started to go backwards, all i heard was a sort of snaping noise, and then the engine cut out. So i tried to start it again and move forward, and i was able to do so and drive around the block no problems.

Anyone know what this could be?

Your rear brake disks rusted tight because they stood wet overnight and then you stalled it.
Either leave the car in gear with the handbrake off next time or go for a short drive after you have washed the car.

Just the brakes snapping out of place. It got me at first and I was like WTF? but then thought "meh" when it still drove ok.

Thanks for all the replies. What was that snapping noise? The brakes?

The binded disk and pad braking apart. It's a normal sound if your brakes had seized. It's nothing to worry about just next time either dry the brakes with a short drive or leave the car in gear (if it's a flat road) better still both.

Sorry, its manual.

Yes my brake disks are rusty, do they need replacing?

Well, not nescessarily. Has it been stood a while (a week or more) and did it grind only when it was moved or at a standstill ? Re the egine cutting out too, could you say it stalled or just died at idle under no load ?

It could be quite possible that the handbrake shoes had siezed on or that a pad or pads had siezed to disc. Could use more info if possible. ;)

His pads seized. He stalled the car because he wasn't used to having to give it more welly. Not a major concern. It happens.

I stalled im quite sure, i was sitting in an awkward seat position wearing slippers just moving the car for my sister.

And the car had not been driven since friday night(motorway run), like i said before i washed it very thouroughly including the wheels with a hosepipe yesterday afternoon and it hasn't been driven since then. :)

I have these type of alloys :

Ok I guess if it did this just the once then it could well be ok now. It does happen, frequently. Just remember not to let it stand on the handbrake alone for extended periods. Leave it in gear with the handbrake off.
