Weird Gatso's

Oh ok then its the distance travelled between the first picture and second.

yup. And because the flashes are timed (they are always the same) they can work out you speed by doing the distance over time equation.

The copper definetely wasn't winding me up, probably just misinformed.

The copper wasnt misinformed. Infact thats the most deviantly intelligent policeman ive ever heard of.

"No son, they just take photos randomly, you can speed right through usually without even getting a ticket"

Policeman Ted - Single handedly increasing speeding ticket fines 100%

Sounds to me like the copper was out to make more money for the force. Think about it - he tells you this, you believe him, you then go and drive over the limit through it becuase you think it only flashes every ten minutes.

= higher chance of you getting flashed.

See what he has done there?

edit - damn you Gord! Wish I'd refreshed after reading the thread, before replying ;)

BUT, if the timing between the two flashes is even MICRO seconds out then this COULD show as much as 5-10 mph INCREASE in speed.

There was a huge case (maybe this time last year) where some guy timed flashes on Gatsos after getting caught and he went to court and they refused to see him and or change is court date, supposed evidence had gone missing, etc, GATSO wouldnt declare how their cameras worked, etc..

Wonder what happened to that in the end

/Goes to google........

The Gatso will emit a certain frequency wave. It has a preprogrammed limit for red/blue shift and so anything it detects that is feasible for a speed it will flash for. This is why above a certain speed the Gatso won't flash (didn't top gear put it around 170mph?) Anyway if you can work out whatever frequency makes it flash then you can set them off yourself. Presumably something was emitting this frequency?
