Weird Genuine Windows problem

I have a friend, running Windows 7 Professional, Student Edition.

Every few weeks he gets a popup saying, basically, "your copy of windows may not be genuine. click here."

That link takes him to the micorsoft website, where he is told his copy of windows is not genuine, and he can buy one of these new editions.

I am called at this point, and shut the browser down, go to the windows start menu, type activate, and click the activate windows options. After a few seconds, it says, "congratulations, windows has been activated."

So, windows is telling him that the version is not genuine, and then when the activation process is run, it is telling him it IS genuine. What???

Any idea what might be causing this, and how to solve it?

PS: I know the copy of windows is genuine, since it was delivered to me and I installed it for him.

if something stops the software protection service connecting out
it sometimes flags the copy as non genuine
