I have just bought a 80GB Hitachi IDE drive to replace a 40 gb maxtor that had failed in my old P4 pc.

When I try and install windows xp on it and it gets to the bit where it formats it, it gets to 100% and then says the disk cannot be formatted and my be damaged it does this if you choose quick or full format.

I have tried this drive in my other pc and it picks it up fine, I have formated it from this pc ok but when trying to install xp on it again from the P4 pc I still get the same message when it comes to formating it.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Try to format it in the other PC, replace and on XP instal tell it to leave partition as is.

Run partition magic and set up a 40g primary partition, try to install to that.

if none of the above work you need to look into Bios/settings on your motherboard because ( and I assume the drive has been picked up correctly in the bios) I would hope You already checked the Bios is seeing the full drive capacity before posting... ;)
