Ok so this probably isn't new but I was playing some games at 4K and noticed the FPS are unusually high, I took screenshots etc... and all of them said the res is at 3840x2160.

Now I have my desktop set to 1440P, I changed this to 4K and suddenly ingame performance went down by about 30%.

Now from screenshots taken at both intervals both are 4K and identical which has me wondering if rendering the desktop in 4K while a game is also in 4K has some adverse effect on the games performance ?

Try a simple game bench with desktop res at 1080/1440/4k and see if you can spot any difference? It may have a little truth to it but I'd be surprised if it were as big of a difference as 30%.

As we know 4k60 & 1440/144 will have the gpu sat at higher utilisation then at other lower resultion and refresh rates, it's actually the reason I have my desktop running 1440/120, that way my cards drop all the way down to idle.

So, what do you think was happening...were the games running at the lower desktop rez, but the on-screen info telling porkies?

Well so far the only game it appears to effect is Sleeping Dogs.

With the desktop set to 1600P and the ingame settings all at max including 4K minus AA set to normal I get an average of 120FPS.

With the desktop set to 2160P and the games settings the same as above I get an average of 88FPS yet both screenshots show a resolution of 4K and look identical.

I'm stumped
