weird problem need help!!!

Hey everyone, ive got a problem which i just dont understand and i need help

currently i have a netgear dg834gt. Wireless works flawlessly which is weird in one thing however my real prblem ,is that my wired devices such as the 2 computer in my room get frequent "pauses" when downloading, as well as only being able to download at half the speed of wireless, i have 9mb(upto 16mb Sky BB) and my laptop and my brothers and sisters can all download at }~900kb/s whilst my "wired" computer can only download at ~400kb/s sometimes 500, so in essence i get "pauses" when i say pauses i mean im downloading at 400kb/s and all of a sudden it will stop for like 3 seconds and then start, however if im logged onto the router page and refresh it will just continue without waiting 3 seconds????? and i can only download at half the speed. SO i changed it for a my old belking router which seems not to pause on the lan but still only downloads at half the speed. however i want to use the netgear as it has higher sync. It never used to do this "ive tried to netgear dg834gt's bot the same problems". so please help me sort this its a real pain.

p.s i forgot to mention wireless doesnt "pause" it works flawlessly

due to how wireless works the speed all depends on where the laptop or system is connecting from i.e if its in the next room ect the pausing could be slight loss of connection with the router, try updating the firmware on the router if this doesn't help i would suggest looking at the Belkin F5D8631 N1 Wireless Modem Router.
 
is there a single cable which runs from your the 2 computers in your room to the router in another room?

If so i assume you have a small switch in your room also, rather than 2 cables running to the router. If so, the switch may well be the problem, else it could be a cable problem.

have you tried with one of your computers on a wired connection directly into the back of the router? (with a different cable if you do just run 1 long one) See if that resolves the issue?
 
hey jimbo thanks, i did try it without the switch to no avail. its weird coz with different routers there are different problems :/ so if anyone has any other ideas please let me knwow
 
Hm, unlikely for both network cards to be playing up, as you say, it is both computers...

what is the problems you have with the other router may i ask?

Also, are your IP address's assigned manually or by DHCP
and.. Have you got any sort of QOS (quality of service) running on the router, or something that limits bandwidth on the LAN connections to 50%, while keeping the wireless at 100%. Perhaps your brother or sister maybe set this up in an attempt to improve their connection and didn't say anything?

one manually and one by DHCP, theres no QoS in place and my bother and sister are 10/12 so i highly doubt they put anythign on both my PC's :D

OO thats right i forgot to mention, that im on homeplug to my 2 pc's, but i tried to connect 1 direct to the router, DG834GT and it still got pauses but downloaded at 900kb/s so i thought the belkin doesnt pause so i swapped the router and tried again this time no pauses but onoly download at 400kb/s where as wirelss is still fine downloading at 900kb/s so im stumped
 
I'm not entirely sure I understand the normal arrangement - is it:

router
|
homeplug
|
|----- homeplug --- PC1
|----- homeplug --- PC2

When you tried connecting one of the PCs direct to the router, did you disconnect the homeplug from the router? Current wild guess is that the homeplugs are doing something weird.

A few other questions that might help narrow it down:
- does it do this for all traffic (http, ftp, usenet, etc.) or is it just one type / application?
- how are you measuring speed/throughput? Does Task Manager, Networking show the same throughput and pauses?
- is it ~ 400kbps download speed on both wired PCs simultaneously? Does it happen to increase to ~ 900kbps if you only download on one at a time? (i.e. could this be the limit of the homeplugs?)
- there's no chance of you getting bps (bits) and Bps (bytes) mixed up in comparing wired to wireless speeds is there? ;)
- is it also slow and pause when transferring data between the wired PCs?

I'd suggest going 'back to basics' and try connecting one pc at a time directly to the router (without homeplugs and using a different patch lead each time) and see what happens, and then both PCs, and then the homeplugs to see how things change.
 
Hey wonko, thanks a lot for the advice, no it goes Router---- Homeplug------ homeplug -----switch ---- PC's, taking one of the PC's out of the equation does nothing, plugging directly in without homeplugs i.e taking my comp downstairs, does sort the problem now, but its weird as the pauses only happen on the netgear not the belkin, its probably the homeplugs that are the problem, but its only just started, should i leave the homeplugs out for a while or something????
i cant go back to using wireless and i can run a wire up my stairs and i cant take the homeplugs back its been ages .....

Looks like the homeplugs are the likely culprit then, and doing something weird over the LAN than the netgear router takes exception to more than the belkin and causes the pausing.
Are there any config options on the homeplugs? Make and model might give someone a bright idea. It might be a long shot, but if it's a hard fault on one of them, have you tried swapping them over (wouldn't fix the problem but might make it more livable)?
 
Aha homeplug.. well well... make sure you have them both plugged into the main wall socket, not an extension lead. Some work great anywhere and some don't. You may also find that if the homeplugs are on separate circuits, it can cause problems.

Have you ruled out issues on your computer that may be slowing the speed of your downloads?

But also.. If you can, it may be worth checking the speed that you are getting through them.. most homeplugs run around 85Mbps, which equates to about 10.8MBps.. enough for you to achieve your full download speed.. However.. you may not be achieving that due to many factors, such as distance, age of your house, the wiring setup, if your neighbour is using homeplug too, etc..

One more thing i can think of is some of the homeplug kits suffer from sustained transfer lag, which could be the case here... They can drop to around 20Mbps, which is around ~ 2.5MBps... add that speed to possible packet loss caused by the above stated factors and we have the predicament you are in.
