Weird problem - slow start menu!

For some reason, my start menu has decided to mark everything in the "all programs" section as a new, unused program (in yellow). This isn't a problem in itself, but everything goes really slowly as soon as you hit the "all programs" button; the start menu effectively freezes, and it's a good 30 second wait to get any responsiveness back. I assume that this is because it repopulates the list each time, thinking that they're all new programs?

Anyone got any idea on how to sort this? It's really bugging me!

Yep, I had been having boot problems (turned out to be my CMOS battery), so in working out what was wrong there I checked the RAM and HDD.

This is clearly a software or maybe even a HDD problem as said before.

If you look at them all so it un-highlights them, do they come back as new?

might be a glitch in the registry perhaps?
Have you changed your system time at all?

Interesting. Perhaps if your CMOS battery was playing up, the date was wrong in windows, which screwed up how it recognises the programs are newly installed? Is the time and date right now?

It could be to do with a shotcut which is a network location. Mine stalls sometimes looking for a quicklaunch shotcut when the network location isn't available.

Actually that's a great point, my system date is back in 2007!!! Will have a gander in the BIOS and get back to you!

The more you put in the more it slows down. Try, CCleaner, a disk defrag maybe and first of all, reboot. I did and it seemed to speed it up and fix everything.
