Weird problem with son's new machine

I've built up a machine for my son, which is a massive improvement over his creakng old one. It's build around an Asus P5K, an E5200 and 4Gb Crucial Ballistix 800MHz RAm.

It'll only boot with one stick of RAM, not two, and even then I have to underclock the RAM too 600MHz or so just to get it to boot. Not overclocking at all and everything is seated correctly. Have also tried the latest BIOS but that hasn't helped.

Any ideas?

Here is a solution you could try, the memory is a twin pack of 2GB Dual memory therefore, the memory should be inserted as below.

I shall lay this out in Layman's Terms which makes explaining a little easier. You have two yellow and two black memory modules if these are placed as "one" into Module A and the other into Module B (Black) then put these into Module A and Module B (Yellow) and then boot up and see what happens.

If you still have the same problem then, there is a chance there is a problem with the memory. As suggested by Liquidfox try one stick in either of the modules and see if it will boot, try one stick at a time in all modules.

Hope this helps.

disconnect all optical/HDD on the system.

if the mobo has onboard GPU then use that, if not, make sure your graphics card is seated well and powered.

put one memory module in a BLACK slot.

reset BIOS.

see if this will POST

Following on from what EsaT suggested..

I have a P5K-E Wifi, and I originally had 2x2GB of G.Skill memory rated 1.8v. I didn't have any problems booting when the RAM's voltage was set to 1.8v but windows wasn't 100% stable. After setting the RAM's voltage to 1.85v in the bios I didnt have any more problems.
