Not sure what's going on here, but sometimes (about 1 in 4 times) when the the login screen appears, the cursor disappears. This means I can't type in a password. I have to reboot which is damn annoying. It doesn't seem to matter if it's from loging off or from when the screen is automatically locked, I get the same problem.

Tried hitting every key.. no joy.

Any ideas?

I sometimes get this problem...generally I just use the force :D
Seriously though just use tab and shift-tab to get around the login screen. Once you get into windows proper the cursor always returns for me

how do you get into windows without being able to enter the password?

You don't need a mouse to navigate windows. Proper use of the CTRL+ALT+DEL, TAB and ENTER keys should get you by for login.

I remember the days when a mouse used to be a optional component for a computer :)

The cursor is not the mouse arrow, it is the blinking vertical line where you type text, if it isn't there you won't be able to type anything.
