Weird ROUTE problem?

Hi,

Basically I have a very strange route problem.

We need to add a route to a specific range and if I do this on Windows Vista it works fine. However, on Windows 2000 and XP, it fails.

Any ideas? Is there an update route for Windows 2000/XP perhaps?

does it work until you reboot or does it not work at all?

After you've run the command run a "route print" and see if its listed. Adding a /p will make it persistent.

The route fails with error message:

The route addition failed. Either the interface index is wrong or the gateway does not lie on the same network as the interface. Check the IP address table for this machine.

With Vista using exactly the same command it works fine.

sounds like the gateway you are trying to use is not in the same subnet as the machine you are adding the route on

The gateway is reachable and pingable. It works on Vista but not XP / 2000.

There must be a subnet mask difference between those two machines or something like that.

when specifiying routes you are specifiying the next hop, which must be reachable in one hop i believe

I might try and get around it by doing the routing on the router rather than on the PC's. Might be easier.
