weird router problems

a friends internet has recently started playing up in a really bizarre way and i'd appreciated any help you guys could give.

the setup is: a virgin media cable coming into the house, into a virgin media modem, then out into a Belkin F5D5231-4 router. unfortunately the house has 8 students in it, and the aforementioned router only has 4 ethernet ports, so they have a splitter connected to it where all but one of them connect into. the remaining student connects straight to the router as its in her room.

apparently they have to restart the router/modem once a day usually as it stops working but earlier this week it stopped working and that won't fix it anymore. none of them can connect to the internet through either the splitter or the router, apart from one of them (the girl who previously connected straight into the router), and that's only through the router - it doesn't work through the splitter. i rebooted the router through the control panel, which didnt help. then i reset the router, and that didnt help either. i took my laptop along to see if it would work - it didnt.

why would only one specific computer be allowed to connect to the i'net? and what the hell can i do to fix it? :/

hope that all makes sense, any help is very much appreciated.

Splitter? You mean a switch?

Output from start, run, cmd, ipconfig /all for the machine that works, and one of the machines that doesn't, might be useful.
Can the machines that don't get anything from the internet see the router? Any errors?

haha yes, probably mean a switch.

i can't get to the computers at the moment, but i can tell you that the computers that can't get the internet can get through to the router.

thanks!

sometimes there is a specific order you need to reboot things to get it to work
if my opwer goes off then on, the switch starts quicker than my router dishes out the ip address and nothing works
try
power off both router and switch
power on router
wait 60s
power on switch

see if that sorts things out
