Weird static problem after time i'm confused

ok not even sure i'm in the right section BUT after a few hours running (especially if my display has turned off and i turn it back on) i get a weird static on the screen... I have no idea why! turning the pc off then on again fixes it. Turning the display off then on does nothing so i'm assuming it's pc side but why? temps are fine across the board sure i'm running a 980 so she's not really a young un but still in good working order and the restart fixes it straight up. Anyone got any ideas? it's almost like i'm back in analogue TV days (feel free to move to correct place on forums... it's been a while since i've been on here so i've forgotten where to post things)

Completely broken VRAM wouldn't be solved by restart, but maybe memory or something could be overheating.
Or there's some other corruption of VRAM content during powered on time...

something could be overheating.

The card is getting on a bit now so maybe try repasting/padding the gpu core and ram chips.

But first an underclock the core / ram / powerlimit and see if that fixes as this would confirm it's a heat issue or just degradation over time.
