I have a oem xp pro, installed on a system built by OC themselves, over time ive swapped the 2 6800ultra's to a 7900gtx, ive installed new drivers for the bits and bobs, installed all without problem.
The other day i installed the latest nforce4 drivers and when windows reboots it says it needs to be activated again.
Just this weekend I stick in an additional dvd writer, and to my shock it does the same again!! Whats going on. Not really fussed as I have built a new rig ready for vista ultimate (assuming nvidia release me some grx drivers :D ). I hope vista isn't so twitchy.

I plugged a USB hub in 2 weeks back, and XP asked me to revalidate as my hardware had changed significantly

I also had this happen a few days ago when I upgraded my router (from a Billion to a SpeedTouch 585 as it is supposed to work better on long lines on Max).

I had a message on screen saying that my hardware had changed significantly and would need re-activation.

I had to ring up Microsoft and speak to an agent who gave me a new activation code over the phone.

This is the second time I have had to do this as I had to do the same thing a couple of years ago.

I still have the original motherboard and CPU and have only upgraded the graphics card, sound card and RAM

Wouldnt be surprised if this becomes more regular once vista is out.

Next time you call you may get told " Ah Sorry sir, you wouldnt get this bother with vista....Give it a go"

They must have changed something in a recent update for it to activate on something as trvial as a usb hub

As for a router XP shouldnt even know what is connected to the LAN hardware wise as a router requires no drivers so who knows whats going on there......

I don't know either but all I know is that after changing routers and rebooting the PC after visiting the Microsoft Update website and downloading and installing 3 updates (which were a security update for IE7, the malicious software removal tool and a Windows Defender update), the message came up on my screen
