Weird VGA HDMI Problem

Basically, yesterday I purchased this tv:

Seeing as I didnt have a hdmi cable yesterday I connected it to my laptop via VGA cable. To my surprise it set the resolution to 1920x1080 and it looks fantastic, very clean and clear.

However today I recieved a HDMI cable, when I connect my laptop and TV using HDMI cable instead, it shows that the correct resolution is set, however the picture looks slightly distorted in some places (mostly visable on text, looks almost like artifacts) and the picture isn't very clear/sharp. Connecting over HDMI also gives me a black border round the whole image!

What could be the problem here?

the black border issue sounds like an overscan/underscan issue. i believe this is usually something you can change in your gpu's control panel (for example, in the ATI CCC there's an option to alter the overscan on digital displays)

as for the state of the picture, maybe an incorrect resolution/refresh rate set or a dodgy cable?

and yes, VGA is good upto 1080 (and possibly higher actually?) :)

Probably the TV is doing some under/overscan aswell. Make sure its set to a 1:1 mode, or 'just scan' in some cases. VGA or PC mode on most TV's will do this by default, which is why it looks better.

Okay, I've set the TV to "just scan" and used scaling in CCC to get the picture to fit correctly, however it still doesnt look as good as over VGA...

Played about with the settings, for some reason the sharpness was set at 100, turned it down and the picture looks perfect now exactly the same as VGA. Thanks for the help guys!
